It’s been like that since Magomed Abdusalamov’s brain injury proceedings.

It was a con job. That rule is there for a reason but it is a rule that is very open to exploitation and thats what happened with Wilder. When did they ever stop the fight to check on Ortiz? Doesnt make sense to me. Ortiz is trying to hurt Wilder and when Wilder gets hurt he gets taken to the side and gets time to recover. Hed just been sat down for a minute he could of been checked out at any point during that.

I don’t think Ortiz was ever in trouble at the bell. Prior to the stoppage, Luis received a standing eight count for the knockdown in the fifth. But I agree, I don’t see why the doctor couldn’t check on Wilder between rounds. It’s been done many times.

I remember hearing Pauli and literally only Pauli saying "WHAT'S HE DOOOOIN?? WHAT'S THE REF DOOOIN? HE CAN'T DO THAT!!" I love his "call it as he sees it" commentary!

It was quite odd to see, i'm not sure I remember a ref pulling somebody to one side after the bell has rung, to check he's okay. Butttttt fair play to Wilder for righting his wrongs Albeit against an older Ortiz

Lol I don’t remember Paulie’s reaction, but I do know he found the ref’s move “shady.” Everyone here is in agreement that it’s what’s done in NY now, as weird as it may seem. Regardless of that, like you, I give Wilder credit for coming back and winning the fight. He’s a tough man with a lot of heart. Now let’s see what the rematch looks like...
