Seventh and Eighth Round of Wilder-Ortiz I

Just saw a clip someone posted on Facebook. I hadn’t seen the fight since it first aired. Seeing the footage again was startling. Ortiz landed some hard shots that sent Wilder reeling at the end of the seventh. Deontay may or may not have been fully recovered when the referee stopped the action as the bell sounded for the eighth round. It was an inexplicable move.

I remember all this, but seeing it again just had me shaking my head. If there was concern, why didn’t the doctor look at Wilder between rounds? According to Wikipedia, “Wilder's corner (huh?) signaled to the referee to call time out to inspect Wilder's face.” The ref bought Deontay twenty precious seconds and possibly saved his crown. Unbelievable when you watch this again.

I was pissed watching it live. But since then, I have noticed that inspection by the Doctor after the 1 minute break seems to be the normal procedure in NY. I noticed other instances of this break during random undercards fights in NY. I just can't remember which fights they were so I could provide examples.

Now that I think of it - they probably inspected Margarito's eye after the end of the break between rounds in the Cotto rematch. And I believe they did the same recently during Diaz-Masvidal UFC fight.

They also has Wilder ahead on the cards. Everything is stacked in favour of Wilder in all his fights.

Is that right? I don’t recall ever seeing that done before. Paulie Malignaggi called it “shady.” I respect his commentary, and I expect him to know what he’s talking about. But I don’t doubt what you’re saying.

Respect to Wilder, he’s got a chin and heart, but I thought those twenty extra seconds might’ve saved him. It’s also possible he would’ve weathered the storm anyway, but I thought that ref move was unnecessary BS. There wasn’t even a cut.

I don’t remember who I had ahead, but Wilder did score a knockdown in the fifth. Then again, he was being shut-out versus Fury and managed a split-draw, so maybe you have a point. Lol

Is it a New York thing? Doesn’t seem to be widespread.

That is why Wilder needs to be knocked out. It is too tough a task for grandpa though.

I think excuse was the guy that passed away in NY. But still till today I think it was shady thing to do. They didn’t inspect Wilder during the interval. They did AFTER the bell has sound and the boxers were about to collide. People keep throwing in other examples since that fight but almost all of them have been in the corner checks, not after the bell has rang with the doctor then deciding to do a check.

I thought the same - even though it's seems to be NY's procedure, I still think it benefited him. I just don't attribute it to potential corruption (still creeps into my mind though, how can it not).

I don't really like the argument," oh, but Ortiz got the same break!"..that was his moment to pounce
