Julio Cesar Chavez Jr drew big numbers.

Canelo has only ever done good numbers when they paid for a popular opponent.

You gauge a real fighter by their numbers against imports and in Canelo case he has many.

I think the reality is that Canelo is marketed very well though even the Casuals aren't fooled anymore. He's only ever survived off his Mexican fan base.

Soon enough DAZN will figure out that Canelo isn't the star they thought he would be. I'm sorry but not speaking English hurts him and he doesn't fight the best fighters in their prime. Frankly, GGG is probably the only name that would give him big gate numbers but I'm not sure if many people are willing to pay Canelo retire GGG.

Canelo was a 4-1 favorite over a guy that most casual fans know for either his ko loss to André ward or his most recent criminal charges. It isn’t surprising the live gate did poorly.

DAZN also needs to market better on the East Coast. A lot of people didn’t even know there was a fight.

Maybe the fans on the west coast t decided to buy DAZN instead of going to the fight.

I also think blaming DAZN is inappropriate.

It's the promoters job to make sure tickets get sold and the fight gets properly advertised.

Traditionally yes I would agree, we are now in an era of heavy network/app investment and like FOX promotion of PBC fights especially ppvs, networks do need to understand they have a role....FOX and Showtime do, dazn doesn’t outside of social media posts which cost very little

Here's a fun fact. Mayweather-Berto sold over 13,400 tickets and did a gate close to $10 million - which everyone at the time said was a huge disappointment.

Fun fact, I got free tickets to Floyd/Berto from a time share presentation the day before the fight. Didn’t go.
Apparently a lot of venders bought them up then had to give them away for a tax write off when they couldn’t sell them with any mark up.

It holds 16,800. It was scaled down to 15K because GB knew ahead of time the event would not sell out - which is why it didn't go to a venue like T-Mobile, which holds 20K.

This was a very poor number for a guy deemed as the "face of boxing."

And based on the gate, I can't see them doing enough sub numbers to justify 35 million to Canelo and 12 million to Kovalev. When factoring in the marketing and ad money, over $50 million they would have had to make to break even.

The only reason Canelo fought at the MGM Grand and not at the T Mobile arena was because the T Mobile arena was already booked for a different event way before the Canelo-Kovalev fight was signed so stop saying Canelo fought at the MGM because Oscar knew the fight wouldn't sell out.
