  • Comments Thread For: Deontay Wilder: I Was Very Buzzed By Luis Ortiz - Never Hurt!

LOS ANGELES-Deontay Wilder survived the scariest 45 seconds of his eleven-year career during his fight last year with Luis Ortiz. The Cuban stunned Wilder in the seventh stanza and was teeing off with a barrage that the Olympic bronze medalist winner miraculously staved off while surviving against the ropes.

I thought he was hurt, if him wobbling around at the start of the 8th round was any indication. If a punch buckles your legs and widens your eyes for longer than 30 seconds, I consider that "hurt".

Wilder did nothing in the 8th round except lie against the ropes covering up and grabbing Ortiz to smother his punches. If Ortiz had kept his cool and picked his punches, instead of getting wild and blowing what little gas he had, Wilder would have been stopped.

That's a cool story Beyonce, so do you care to explain that extra minute at the start of the 8th then? Was that just for a laugh?

Deontay is my boy and all but I have to disagree with man. He was more than just buzzed; He was actually hurt and out on his feet. He did display a tremendous amount of championship heart and chin and all but he was concussed.

Also, had he gone down chances are he probably wouldn't have gotten up or the referee would have probably had to save him from himself from absorbing too many punches and punishment. I was surprised that the referee allowed the fight to go on for as long as he did because Wilder was finished by that point.

Sounds like a case of "that's boxing".

I think he was stunted and hurt, enough for the doctor to buying some time AFTER the belt had rang. Its an old school trick for the home fighter.

I get so pissed off over that extra minute myth before the start of the eighth round. Actually, it was only 17 seconds. The referee had no choice but to call time out because the doctors never left the ring apron. They were only following proper procedure and protocol.

The ref should have done his job and made the doctors get off of the apron faster. Clearly an inside job for Wilder, because Ortiz was about to stop him. As a matter of fact, if Wilder had just fell down in the 7th round, Ortiz would have stopped him. If Wilder dropped his guard and let Ortiz hit him cleanly on the chin, Ortiz would have stopped him as well.
