Comments Thread For: Froch, Nelson Shake Heads at WBC's "Franchise" Champ Label

Back in June, the World Boxing Council elevated Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez to the status of "franchise champion." Canelo was the WBC's middleweight champion. Taking his place as the "full" champion was Jermall Charlo, who held the WBC's interim-title at 160-pounds.

I don't really understand it. Can he lose it? Does it mean anything other than its just the WBC showing their love to canelo? Is he not allowed to be their proper world champion any more?

From what I can gather (might be way off) it’s a wbc championship belt that doesn’t require mandatories

Basically a way of protecting the cash cow . Aka bulls**t

It's basically a "I can do whatever I want" title just for Canelo. I've said this many times before, but Suleiman's preferential treatment for the guy borders on nauseating.

Why is everybody pretending that Charlo is the "full" champ. Charlo is on the same level as WBA regular champs. The "full" WBC champ is the one who is recognized by other organizations (WBA, IBF and WBO) as WBC champ, and that is Canelo.
A fighter himself or journos can call that fighter whatever they want, but if that person is not recognized by authorities as champ it means nothing.

                  ... CASH COW Canelo:

                  ... clearly lost to Mayweather...
... barely "scored" a DRAW vs Lara (at 155, with no belt on the line)...
... clearly lost to ggg in the first fight...

No, the franchise title is something completely different, because it can't be won from the champion by beating him in the ring. There has never been a boxing title like that before.

The rules around franchise titles given at the WBC site are very vague, and I think that's deliberate, because Sulaiman wants to be able to make them up as he goes along.

"1. The Franchise Champion designation is exclusively by appointment of the WBC Board of Governors by a majority vote of the board.

                    2. This designation is not transferable and is exclusively to the fighter who receives such designation.

                    3. The Franchise Champion will be designated as WBC Emeritus Champion once he retires from boxing.

                    4. The Franchise Champion will proudly represent the WBC in every single fight as a reigning WBC champion, regardless of any specific conditions or titles being associated with all future fights. WBC rules and regulations will govern under the traditional conditions of boxing in the Franchise champion fights. WBC will approve through the franchise champion promoter every opponent scheduled to fight.

                    5. Franchise Champion agrees to participate in a minimum of two social responsibility events every year, organized and in conjunction with the WBC.

                    6. The WBC may recognize a WBC champion in the division or divisions where the Franchise champion currently competes.

                    7. The WBC may award a Diamond Championship belt in those fights in which the Franchise Champion engages. If the Franchise Champion loses, the winner will receive the Diamond belt and may be considered as mandatory contender of the division."

The World Boxing Council has finalized the process of the appointment of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as Franchise Champion.

So you can't win a franchise title by beating the franchise champion. See rule 7. But will the champion retain the title, even he loses a fight in that division?

The rules don't say. They do say that if a challenger beats the franchise champion he will be awarded a diamond belt and "may" become mandatory for the other WBC champion in that division.

So even that isn't clear cut and definite. I guess he "may" become mandatory for the other champion if Sulaiman wants him to be. And if Sulaiman doesn't want him to be ... "Here's a beautiful diamond belt to honour your victory. Thank you and goodbye"
