Lomachenko: I can't speak English very well...I can't be a superstar

And Loma's fanboys shouldn't get angry when people make uncomplimentary posts or threads about him expressing their own counter opinions. That's one way to keep him relevant. If you get angry at everyone who doesn't think he's the finest thing since recorded history, then you create enemies for him.Comment

Yeah, no. Megastar status in the U.S. is not purely a matter of speaking the native tongue, an oversized personality, or being conventionally attractive/"hot". All of those factors clearly help, but the reality is actually worse than that - it's mostly just marketing. Push someone aggressively enough on the public, with enough zeal, and power of suggestion will do the rest. Joe Public will hop aboard and rationalize doing so with whatever mental gymnastics necessary. As mentioned Canelo is a sterling example of this. Though capable of passable English, he opts not to use it for whatever reason(s). His personality, while affable enough, is about on par with a box of pop tarts. The novelty of being basically a handsome fair skinned Irish redhead who happens to be Mexican has probably gone a long way to helping things along, but is he widely considered drop-dead Ryan Garcia gorgeous? Nah. Golovkin speaks English like an extra friendly Euro immigrant who is on the spectrum and terrified of yellow Skittles. Looks wise he has that wholesome boy next door thing going on, but again, not someone people generally drool over on Instagram. Pacquiao looks like a ****ing Filipino lawn gnome come to life, with height to match, and English so atrocious it'd arguably have been a better idea to keep it native. You get the idea. All megastars, none of whom hit all the obvious requirements one associates with stardom in the superficial U.S. market, at least one of which is flat out ugly (lol). They were all just marketed aggressively enough to the point where Joe Dumb**** finally stood up and screamed "Pacquiao! YES!!" because that's what idiots people are. They'll eat up what you put in front of them. Loma's problem isn't crappy English, it's lack of a big enough push, something beyond his means and control.Comment

It helps but look at guys like Chavez, Canelo, Cotto, Pacman etc. Loma will go down as a great but his age and lack of known rivals is why he won't become a superstar. He's a sure fire hall of famer and no worse than the third best fighter in the world with many having him as the best. Still a phenomenal, all-time talent.Comment

I think Loma is phishing for people to come out and support him. Like he’s sum sort of underdog. Get a bunch of support from non English speakers. I mean how many amazing sound bites do English speaking fighters put out? Or any boxer for that matter. Nobody will be Ali. I’m sure a lot English speaking fans wished Broner spoke another language. Half of boxers say ridiculous things that seem to turn off fans. Everything gets translated, and most loyal boxing fans read their quotes and news. Why act all down and say u will never be a superstar unless you know what ur saying will be polarizing and get publicity? I mean here’s the thread. I can’t believe for an instant he’s trying to admit to being irrelevant and expects to get less attention after this.
In this day and age I don't think speaking English as your first language is a necessary. I think Lomachenko should just be himself, I don't really think these comments make him look good.
Muhammad Ali was just being himself, and so was Mike Tyson who at times would engage very little with the press. I always like Miguel Cotto the way he seemed stone faced and unaffected by most things etcComment

🗣"I can't be a superstar." 😮@VasylLomachenko says that his lack of English stops him from being a big name, but his ability in the ring can put him in the history books 📖

Mex-Americans make up a decent percent of the population. He doesn't need to learn English lol. If he did he'd be massively more popular which translates into more marketable which translates into more money. He's seemingly okay though he's already making a ton of it.
Ukraine-Americans are probably 0.01% of our population so Loma doesn't have a large footing here. He'd have to shine through his personality/connections- like other stars or popular networks/and performances. He's only able to do the latter here in America...with great English he'd be 3x bigger.Loma doesn’t have guys with a fanbase around him, that’s the problem. He needs to somehow associate with known guys to promote his name. That Garcia fight would have helped him a lot. Right now his best approach might be ****ting on Canelo everywhere he goes “Canelo is a phagit, i’d be willing to go to 160 and fight him”. The headlines would be “p4p #1 Vasyl Lomachenko calls superstar Canelo a phagit, wants to fight him”.ask for that Pacquiao fight at 140, or Call out media baby Spence. He can only go up though, No one is known down.Comment

I am not arguing with you. I am just stating that making a superstar in boxing is not easy for anyone, regardless if they can speak english or not. I mentioned the 147 pounders myself as they get the most attention these days below heavyweight. My point was even though the 147lb guys are more popular than most, becoming a superstar will be difficult for even them.Comment
