Jack Dempsey's promoter booked a fight with Tommy Gibbons in Shelby Montana, 1923. They had no stadium but the town pledged to build a gigantic outdoor stadium. Hardly anyone showed up (how the hell were people supposed to get to Shelby Montana), Dempsey and his promoter took the money and jumped on a train and the town went bust.
But I doubt SA will go bust if this fight doesn't draw. The TV rights are more lucrative than they were in 1923.Comment

Going off wiki, its a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the original home of the current ruling family.
Diriyah was the original home of the Saudi royal family, and served as the capital of the Emirate of Diriyah under the first Saudi dynasty from 1744 to 1818.Comment

Theyre flying through itInteresting. Had no clue.
So the building of a stadium like this seems like a fairly whatever-ish type thing based on Pigeons post with all those 80s fights and this post despite an air of sketchiness with this whole deal. I feel like the Saudi Arabia angle makes it feel even a lil more sketchy than it otherwise might.
