Jones not completely sold on Sanders fight
    By Dan Rafael, USA TODAY
Roy Jones Jr., as savvy a negotiator as he is a prizefighter, hasn't formally committed to fighting Corrie Sanders yet but said he could be persuaded if the price is right.
Jones promoter Murad Muhammad declared the heavyweight title bout a "done deal" last week, but it isn't, Jones told USA TODAY on Saturday night from Miami.

Jones said that though Sanders has signed for a Nov. 8 fight, he still was weighing his options. Jones, who won the WBA title from John Ruiz in March in a historic move up from light heavyweight, said he's not interested in Sanders if he's stripped of his WBO version of the title. Sanders probably would be stripped for facing Jones instead of his mandatory, Lamon Brewster.

"If they strip him there is no real reason to fight him," Jones said. "But maybe I would if the money is right. I need to make way more than (the Ruiz fight) because that wasn't easy. I just made it look easy."

Jones gave away 33 pounds to Ruiz. He'd be at a similar disadvantage against the 6-4, 230-pound Sanders, a faster, harder hitter than Ruiz.

"No title and Ruiz money to fight Sanders? Forget it," said Jones, who was guaranteed $10 million for Ruiz but made much more when the pay-per-view did nearly 600,000 buys, far more than projected. "But if they bring a big bag of money, I'll whip his (butt)."

If he doesn't face Sanders, Jones wants Antonio Tarver, who won two of the light heavyweight belts Jones vacated after beating Ruiz. "That's the fight I'm most enthusiastic about," he said. "We need to fight. We're from the same state (Florida), and they gave him my titles."

Jones said one of his reasons for being so deliberate in deciding about Sanders is because his father, Roy Jones Sr., doesn't like the fight.

"My dad was like, 'Why fight a man like that for the same money they gave you for Ruiz? He's a dangerous guy. You got nothing to prove. If they're not paying you double or triple the money there's no reason,' " said Jones, who still consults his father and ex-trainer despite a strained relationship. "So I'm still in limbo."
jones would have been put in a coma in the first round

Jones read into that athletic powerpunching southpaw stuff and he never ever had any intentions of fighting Sanders...in my opinion.

You can make the case that the white boy from south africa ran him out of the division right into Toney Tarvers hands...that is the question...why did Jones go back to 175 and fight Tarver?

What was the Tarver appeal? Was it that he lost a ton of rounds in two fights to Eric Harding or the boxing public was dying to see it???...I think Jones watched both fights with Harding and so little danger.

        Why Tarver?

              Put it this way:

Roy is so shot now that Boozo won't even lift his skirt to defend Roy any more!

Tarver was crashing Roy's press conferences and making a lot of noise in the boxing media. Roy really never wanted to fight Tarver. But who was he going to fight? Tarver had the belts at 175, and Roy had no intentions of fighting a serious punching HW like Sanders, Lewis or Vitali, no matter what he said. Roy wanted no part of Jirov, and Toney had targeted Holyfield and a HW campaign.

Tarver was the only serious option if he wanted to continue fighting. This is the kind of fight he would have avoided earlier in his career. He would have found mandatories to fight, etc. And everyone would have continued to believe Roy was indestructable. The art of tip-toeing around tough fights is as important to a HOF career as winning titles and championships.

                  He beat Tarver by MD.
Aside from Tarver, Griffin was the only blemish on his record and he cleared that up. He wanted to clear up the whole Tarver controversy and he felt confident that he would do just that, because when they fought the first time he had difficulty making weight and a tooth ache. He felt that if he was 100% he would win more convincingly. So he took the chance, went and pressed the action against Tarver (in their second fight) got caught with a huge counter. **** happens.

I still wonder what a prime Roy's chin was like... was it always glass, or was that just age?
                      It was age and concussions.
He had a decent chin, he got hit with some good shots in his career and was never hurt.
