DAZN Forcing Canelo to Commit to GGG Trilogy if he Wants to Fight Derevyanchenko

I don't think people are looking at the totality of the situation:

If Canelo balks he loses from the scenario as well. If he sits out he doesn't get paid & if he tries to go to court this could be a lengthy process.

& even hypothetically if he got out his contract & left DAZN. The likelihood of him going to PBC is slim to none! The only other platform he has the potential to go on is ESPN. Who do they have at 160? Brant & Murata? You think the fans are gonna be accepting of that? & even if they are how long will they be? Also Canelo is on GBP. ESPN if I'm not mistaken has an exclusive deal with TR. GBP don't wanna share Canelo with anybody & I'm not sure if Canelo can or will leave on his own. This situation seems messy & could get very complex if Canelo wanted to play hardball.

Also I think it's unlikely but what if Canelo lost to Derevyanchenko. (I don't think the powers that be will allow it no matter what) but that would change a lot! Dazn would look very dumb if Derevyanchenko beat Canelo.

I think Canelo is gonna be backed in a corner soon enough. & by that I mean do something or fight someone he may not want to. It's weird tho he can't possibly think they would give him this large ass contract w/o fighting top competition/who Dazn wants him to fight.


I think what's sorta messed up about this situation is Canelo is fighting tougher opposition while GGG seems to just be positioning himself to fight Canelo when he's ready.

This is an underrated post & something I thought about immediately after the tweet. So: if Canelo doesn’t agree to face GGG next after Derevyanchenko, Dazn literally won't approve the fight & allowed him to be stripped? 😯 That's a very big statement imo & needs an answer.

Moving the needle doesn't equate to moving it far enough to make getting $35m for rocky fielding profitable.

Getting 1.2m viewers for getting $35m vs Jacobs who himself got $10m, is con****uously more viewers than they have subscribers.

He would have to bring in 440k new subscribers who subscribed for a year to make that break even, because even at their higher 1 month subscription cost, that still comes out at a loss.

Now add in the $35m from the fielding fight, Canelo needs to have brought in 800 thousand new subscribers that will subscribe for atleast a year just to break even for DAZN.

It says a lot that DAZNs spin is that the viewership numbers were great for sponsors.

When your business model is to gain subscribers, and you are touting that the numbers were good for sponsors... yeah... the subscription rates are probably not something to write home about it.

They continue to have a problem with people signing up just for the fight, then canceling, because they have nothing compelling in the works.

DAZN is not close to being profitable in the states yet, no one is arguing otherwise. However, please tell me what happens if Canelo is not fighting on DAZN? How much money do they lose then? You think GGG will be able to bring in enough subscribers to cover his 15M per fight bill?

I don't buy DAZN has 1.2 million subscribers right now, but no one knows how many new subscribers the Jacobs brought in. Not only that, was the retention rate and how many signed up for the yearly package?

DAZN isn't trying to make money right now. That would be foolish to think B-level sports and a niche sport like boxing could make them a profit. They want to get their brand out before going for the big boy sports rights. Boxing in a few years likely will be diminished on DAZN if they are ever able to get a certain Sunday Ticket package or some type of NBA package. Boxing is just all they can do in the short-term...Along with Bellator.

Also, John Skipper was named the new chairman of DAZN and launched here in America in September 2018; While adding combat sports like Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts to its platform.

In addition, he put Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing USA in charge of all it's boxing content on DAZN; Which includes 32 cards per year. With 16 of them being in the U.S. and while the other 16 is in the U.K.

So to say that DAZN did not exist in the U.S. before Canelo Alvarez is factually incorrect. DAZN did indeed launch boxing in the U.S. Before Saul Alvarez. Remember they had the "World Boxing Super Series" and Matchroom Boxing USA before Canelo Alvarez December 2018 debut.

If it wasn't for Eddie Hearn then Canelo Alvarez wouldn't even be on DAZN because he was the one helped recruit him.

DAZN will make money regardless the opponent Canelo choose to fight. His fans are paying their subscriptions. DAZN should stay out of the match making process. If they don't trust the fighter and their promoter to pick the best fights for themselves, then they shouldn't have given them a contract. Also if Canelo and GGG are both fighting compelling fights, then they already have the subscriptions of both fan bases.

They didn't just give them a contract though. They gave Canelo a contract worth $355million and GGG a contract worth $100million.

Clearly, they did that because they wanted and expected them to fight each other on their app.
