Right, it was Foreman's fault 100%. No disrespect to Clancy or anyone he was working with. I'm just saying he needed the right relationship, a mentor and close friend that really understood him and knew how to help him rebuild. Not just in the ring, but outside of the ring too.
Steward wasn't that person. Different eras, disparate styles, etc. What I mean is he needed someone to guide him like Steward did for Wladimir Klitschko, pulling him out of a dark place after his defeat. What Cus D'Amato was for Mike Tyson.
Jesus took George out of that dark place. No man was going to do it.
I know I compare him to Cooney, but George (aside from being more talented) was actually brought along really well - he was way less experienced than Ali, and had been matched against stilted competition. That's a whole lot better than Cooney KO'ing 3 or 4 recognizable guys who should have been long-retired.
I don't know who/what could have prepared him for Ali. if there were an opponent who fit the bill, do we know george wouldn't have been derailed then? Again, we saw what happened when a more experienced Foreman faced off against a knock-off version of Ali in Jimmy Young. He has admitted to dodging Jerry Quarry. Sometimes fighters just need to lose to grow. That comes down to the fighter himself.
George had a great start to his career. Think about it: Saddler and Moore were very good coaches - he probably didn't need to scrap them; foreman had been sparring partner for Liston; and he was a olympic champion. that's a pretty solid foundation. Clancy - again, probably unnecessary - should have been icing on the cake.
Maybe a good mentor would have helped George rebound better, but the cards seem stacked too much against him.Comment

The one who never loss, Floyd. But being unbeaten is not about talent or skills, its about consistency. Sometimes your overtrained, injured at the last minute, you still have to go in their and get the job done. Floyd had allot of bad nights, and looked sloppy here and their. On a bad night, he can at least run around, clinch, potshot, and get a victory. On a great night, its humiliation.
With the right fighter, and a bad night, he too can be beaten.Comment
