floyd mayweather had an extremely compelling personality. he was cast as a villain, and he had a guy cast as a good guy, manny pacquiao, as his dance partner. make no mistake, the thing that made those two in the superstars they were for a period in time was the prospect of a fight with each other. they used it for years to promote mismatches and get on ppv for 25-50 million bucks.

If he doesn't make an effort to speak fluent English, he his popularity likely peaked. Floyd still has way more followers on all social media platforms. The only advantage Canelo has is his endorsement deals. But again, he doesn't have the charisma or fan appeal to reach the American or European fanbase. He will never be De La Hoya in terms of popularity.

at the end of the day floyd open the door for canelo and helped him become a star. floyd set the standard and canelo and GB took it and ran....Money wise he will surpass floyd. Popularity there is also a good possibility that he can surpass floyd considering he is only 28 and floyd was about 30 when he finally became a star (after the delahoya fight)
