Slavs are a peoples, just like there are Germanic Peoples. Its just a classification....Like Europeans, Africans, and the human race....how far do you want to go?
Ukrainians, Russians, Poles, Catalans are ETHNICTIES.
Lastly, before I put you on ignore, why does any of this mater if Uysk identifies as a proud Ukrainian, with a Pro-Ukrainian stance, who comes out to the Ukrainian flags and sings the Ukrainian anthem with his hand on his heart and just got a new tattoo of the Tryzub (Ukrainian national symbol) on his shoulder the other day? Well the wiki article is quite accurate but still some contradictions within the same paragraph:
The origins of the first Cossacks are disputed, though the 1710 Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk claimed Khazar origin.[nb 2] The emergence of Cossacks is dated to the 14th or 15th centuries Under increasing pressure from the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, in the mid-17th century the Sich declared an independent Cossack Hetmanate, initiated by a rebellion under Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Afterwards, the Treaty of Pereyaslav (1654) brought most of the Cossack state under Russian rule.[5] The Sich with its lands became an autonomous region under the Russian-Polish protectorate.[6]
The Don Cossack Host, which had been established by the 16th century,[7] allied with the Tsardom of Russia. Together they began a systematic conquest and colonisation of lands in order to secure the borders on the Volga, the whole of Siberia (see Yermak Timofeyevich) and the Yaik (Ural) and the Terek rivers. Cossack communities had developed along the latter two rivers well before the arrival of the Don Cossacks.[8]
So established in Ukraine two centuries before one appeared on Russian territory with fundamentally different allegiances/ideologies.
The Ukrainian one historically fighting for their own independence or allying with whomever to benefit themselves and the Don(Russian) Cossacks essentially being a Unit of the Russian Emperical forces from its onset.
The only thing in common here is the term "Cossack".....

I read that Usyk turned down a Russian passport, which he is entitled to carry, and insists on using his Ukrainian passport to visit his homeland, even though that makes entering and leaving more complicated. He comes into the ring with a Ukranian flag, not a Russian one, so it's pretty clear where his loyalty lies.
