A Gaelic Scot might share the share the same British nationality with an English lad but they’re not of the same ethnicity and he’s more related to an Irish lad from Dubin than the English lad.

So established in Ukraine two centuries before one appeared on Russian territory with fundamentally different allegiances/ideologies.

I read that Usyk turned down a Russian passport, which he is entitled to carry, and insists on using his Ukrainian passport to visit his homeland, even though that makes entering and leaving more complicated. He comes into the ring with a Ukranian flag, not a Russian one, so it's pretty clear where his loyalty lies.

It is pointless arguing about the difference between ethnicity and nationality. They can sometimes mean the same thing and sometimes not, depending on the context. .

Funny isn't it.. I think the USSR always seemed to be treated in the West like some kinda monolithic entity but in fact there was over a hundred nationalities or ethnic groupings in an area spanning 11 time zones. I only know more about it than most cos I read a lot and my old man was a staunch Stalinist and Russophile so I kinda had an interest despite being UK/Greek myself.

That's massive, and i'm sure not all those 100 nationalities and ethnic groups asked to be part of the Soviet Union!
