Ok heres another way to look at it
I am sorry if I got short with anyone, it just seems so silly because if one looks at this situation, one can be as mexican as mexican can be, and still also be an American. There is no contradiction.
So lets say there is a draft tomorrow... Would Ruiz be drafted? Or would he be considered a foreign national? What school system educated Ruiz? was it in mexico, or the United States? What state was taxation paid, to uphold the social contract where roads are paved, emergency aid is given, school and other compulsory protections were granted? America or Mexico?
Notice that none of these things speak to Ruiz' culture, his nationality. It is assumed that Mexican ways are absorbed into the atmosphere... There are sections of Richmond California where it is like Mexican village, and nobody speaks a word of English... Not saying this is a good thing, but it demonstrates the point.
Studying and fighting as a mexican? Well if I study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does that form of Judo make me Brazilian? Does it do so if I am a Brazilian raised in Palo Alto? where one of the biggest Brazilian communities exists?
If Ruiz has a problem with the way he was raised, taught, educated, etc it would not be with the Mexican president, it would be with the United States of America.
And none of this means squat regarding the degree of Mexicaness in Ruiz. There are mayan's who have totally different ways than the dominant culture of Mexico, but they are citizens of Mexico, not the Mayan republic! lol. Does not make them less Mayan. A state is a border with a set of institutions and a social contract adhered to, nothing else.Comment

Amen! Agreed. But that is what makes this country great... The Portugese family that makes their food, worships in a congregation of other portugese...all adding to the melting pot of America.
heres my issue: These Portugese and all immigrants who want to be here would say: I am an American...A Portugese American, an Italian American, etc... So when some idiot says that someone raised up in this country is not anAmerican to me that contributes to this influx of individuals who do not want to be Americans but see fit to take from this nation.
I don't think Ruiz is this way, that is not my point. There are posters here who are that way though. It would be like my son meeting a mentor that inspired him and telling me to go fvk myself...."gee dad I know you went without for me, i know you gave tome all I needed, were there, but I am this guy's son!

You cannot tell immigrants that they do not have to make some effort to assimilate into a common culture, anymore than one can have a country with no borders. Canada only gets away with their "patchwork" nonsense regarding immigrants because they favor rich immigrants!
"Balance" as you put it, is achieved when we tell people that there are certain separations that must exist: the separation of church and state, the separation of nationality, culture and citizenship, etc. When a person can worship, socialize and practice their culture as an American, balance is achieved. Most immigrants that want to be here understand that we all make sacrifices for the sake of the melting pot.
Sure as a Hassidic *** it would make life easier if every market kept kosher....and as a ****** it would perhaps be nice to practice legal ideas that reflected my beliefs and do so exclusively...and as an Atheist to stop having to hear those religious crazies screw up a perfectly rationale world... But we all make certain sacrifices to live in the melting pot. these sacrifices never make us less culturally, nationalistically relevant, they are simply the price we pay to follow our self interest and allow others to do the same.Comment

First off, do not get me wrong...no slight against any nationality, but I would be remiss if I did not express something that is starting to bother me about Ruiz and the narrative of the "mexican warrior."
First off: I have been saying since day one that Ruiz has talent and would be a success...My posts can be found here. I did not even count him out against Joshua, saying "I have not seen him recently" and preferring to just not pick on that fight because of this fact.
Adore Ruiz, and I am not a Mexican warrior, just a white boy from East Harlem which brings me to by point:
Ruiz is a Mexican American. He was raised in this country. He has every right to honor his roots but he is about as Mexican as I am well... I am a lot of different things lol.
Yes he has that fighting spirit, yes he fights in a style that is Mexican in many fundamental respects, but those fast hands, that will of iron was fed on Carnitas from California!
I hope people do not see this as a slight against Mexicans but the fact is fellow Americans like myself took a lot of crap on these boards about Ruiz's dimensions when we proclaimed he would be a success and I deserve to revel in his success as much as the next guy...Messican or otherwise...
If you don't know where you come from, how will you know where you're going?Comment
