It´s not that boxing lost it´s popularity. It´s that you´ve aged and suffer from the nostalgia effect. Boxing is as if not as popular as ever. It has grown around the world and with it came higher levels of competition which was felt in america with the arrivals of foreign talent such as the Soviet released Kostya Tszyu, Klitscho Brothers, Lomachenko, GGG, Kovalev. The Philipine uprising and the English resurrection, the fall of the Puerto Rican farm and Mexican Domination. It´s as healthy as ever for the real fight fan and not as interesting for the american patriot

The biggest Combat Superstars will no longer be the Boxer, instead it will be MMA Fighters especially here in America. You're already seeing that transition happen with Mayweather out of the way.

It is not as simple as "Match The Best Vs The Best" how the hell does that make Casuals tune in when they don't even know who the hell any of these guys are. Hardcore Boxing Fans we're in f#cking denial when it comes to our sport, we still think it is as popular as it was during those Glory Years when it is not

Lennox, Rid**** Bowe, Prince Naseem, Oscar, Tito Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker...when these guys fought on HBO they was drawing HUGE Ratings. Today, fans are calling 400K-1 million Views Solid or Good Ratings Mind you HBO and Showtime was is far less homes back then and still was getting better ratings than what Boxing gets now.

Boxing Needs...Less Promoters and more focus on the fighters, while us Hardcore Boxing fans spend time arguing about Haymon vs Arum vs Hearn vs Oscar...the Casual Sports fans don't care about none of them and most of them don't even know who those guys are because THEY DON'T BOX! Personality Sales here in American as seen with Fury and why he got the massive deal from ESPN. In Fact I would say in this ERA Personality is more important than just your skills in the ring

Mayweather would go on ESPN, argue with Brian Kenny and ruffle the feathers of the Casual Sports fans and have them buy PPV's with the hopes to see him get humbled on many Saturday Nights. Nobody currently has that it factor out of the ring to do stuff like this...

To become a huge sport again it needs a heavyweight with universal mainstream appeal.

We saw boxing gain much more popularity in the UK in recent years because of Joshua really. It's become a mainstream sport in the UK pretty much, even to the point where guys like Dillian Whyte can fill 20,000 seat arena's and fight on PPV. It remains to be seen if any HW right now can have worldwide appeal though, not just in their country.

Also boxing is too fragmented. There's so many networks and promoters showing boxing and not working together that i think it would make a casual fan getting into the sport a bit lost on who is who and where to start.

I think that's why MMA had such an upturn in popularity. You know where you stand with UFC, Bellator etc.. everything under one banner and it's pretty concise in the way it functions. Boxing is a mess in comparison.
