Teofimo Lopez: Why so much hype?

Can people explain why this young man is getting so much hype? What has he acheived? Who has he beaten? Does he have a good amateur background? Why do normally sane people seem to think he has a chance against Loma?

I've never seen him fight and can only judge from BoxRec. Looks like just another unproven up-and-comer to me? He has never faced even a World-level opponent? I feel like this kid is being set up for a biiiiig fall, maybe Jeff Lacy-style owning.

How does he compare to Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, who are both also at Lightweight? Do people also believe that Haney or Garcia could have chance at beating Lomachenko?

Because he's out here generating his own hype.

What don't you understand about self promotion?

Most boxers do generate their own hype, look at Jarrell Miller getting the AJ fight for example. But, that doesn't explain the hype Lopez is getting from fans. People are talking about him like he has a legit chance against Loma, and Loma is ducking him. But why are they saying that? Is it desperation or is there reasons behind it? I'd never heard of Teofimo Lopez a month or two ago.

He's young, strong, athletic with power. You don't think Teo coulda done the same thing to Crolla?

Maybe the kid isn't ready. But Loma isn't getting Garcia or Tank. Why not fight Teo? I don't understand the resistance to the fight from Loma fans

Lopez would KO both Ryan Garcia and the much overrated Devin Haney. Teo already beat up Haney in sparring.

Does it not factor in that Lopez hasn't even fought a World-level contender yet? But you're saying he would have very good chance against one of the top 2 or 3 P4P fighters on the planet? I just don't get the logic. What are you basing the opinion on? Lopez beating Magdelano? Menard? I think Crolla would also have beaten those opponents.

vasyl lomachenko is arguably the best amateur boxer ever . he won two gold medals at the olympics and had over 300 [they claim close to 400] amateur fights with only one loss. which he avenged.

and yes, i think he beats up garcia. garcia needs to grow a little more. haney too. l think haney has the best chance for a long career out of any of these guys, but he needs to grow. lopez already has knockout power and that's why he's getting so much attention. davis has power, too but that poor kid never fights. he will not be as effective when he moves up past 135 and they know it. they are just hoping lomachenko gets old and beat up before davis is a 135 or 140 lber.
