Beautiful display of boxing by Kovalev

He uses the swivel jab really well...and that is a power shot for all the “jabs don’t count” people.Comment

I know McGirt said that but I didn't notice. To be fair, I would have to go back and rewatch. The only reason I doubt this is, I really notice when ANY orthdox Boxer moves right. I worked on that for a few years when I Boxed and it's super hard. It put me on the left side of orthodox Boxers which is an area of safety if you're quick and coordinated enough on your feet to do it. It's very difficult to do.Comment

I was at the fight...at the end guys around me (and they werent Russians) were saying Alvarez maybe won 2 rounds. We were shocked at the 116-112 scores.
I watched some replays this morning and saw that Kovalev was scoring even better than I thought he did with the jabs. He was hitting Alvarez on the ears around his gloves with his rights. Kovalevs jabs prevented Alvarez from implementing any game plan he may have had besides waiting for Kovalev to gas out, but Krusher was fresh even in the 12th.Comment

Kov shows why he is an elite of his division, Alvarez was a blip. And he really tried to get stuck in, it just wasnt working for him.Comment

Round 1
Alvarez is moving to the right, Kovalev with zero movement to the right just forward and back. When Alvarez throws almost anything Kovalev just moves straight back.
Round 2
Kovalev moving back just like regular.
At 2:41 Kovalev throws a few punches, squares his feet up and moves right. Kovalev ends up right in front of Alvarez:
At 1:21 Kovalev throws a right hand and lightly steps to the right, but he's never on the right he's still right in front of Alvarez.
At 1:07 Kovalev throws a 1-2 then squares up on the right which puts his foot on the right side, this isn't moving to the right this is just squaring up his rear foot. He puts it back to the rear and is right in front of Alvarez. There is no movement to the right and in the last screen Kovalev is in direct line to take a right hand.

At :21 Kovalev steps to the right one step but ends up right in front of Alvarez. This is not stopping a right hand or putting him out of range.
Round 3
At 2:46 Kovalev throws a string of punches and squares his legs up. Alvarez is covered up in a high guard and can't see Kovalev, Kovalev takes a step with his right to throw a left hook but is still in front of him and totally open to a right hand.
This screen is right when he steps right to square up lmao.
A 1/10th of a second later he's here:

Kovalev throws a right hand then takes a step to the right.
1:53 Kovalev attacks moving to the right, Alvarez is moving right with him.
Round 4
Alvarez lands a right hand out of the gate, Kovalev takes a step right and eats a jab. Ineffective and out of place movement.
2:04 Kovalev throws a combo but is out of place with his feet and his right foot kicks out because he's out of range and ends up right in front of Alvarez a seen here:
1:52 Kovalev throws a right hand but has his right foot off the ground again and squares up moving him slightly to the right but always in front.
1:49 Kovalev throws a right hook out of range and his toe isn't placed properly as seen here:
See how it's pointed and not on the ball or flat? Thats because it's a poorly thrown hook. After he throws it he squares up again. It's a movement to the right, but he's still in front of Alvarez as seen here:
He's totally in range for a right hand and actually in the worst possible position to take a right hand. This isn't technique from Kovalev, this is lack of technique. It's bad form!Last edited by McNulty; 02-03-2019, 04:11 PM.Comment

At :25 Kovalev takes two steps to the right but is always in front of Alvarez. This screen is right after the first step, he's right in front of him.
I'm not seeing any attack, retreat, or lateral movement to the right at all in 4 rounds. I'm not doing 12 rounds of this. The squaring up thing is bad form and I bet if we look at every Kovalev fight he does the same thing.
Every attack Kovalev makes is straight forward or to the left. When Alvarez attacks he moves back several steps which is a Boxing 101 no-no.
Any decent trainer will say one step back then move laterally. Like so:
Thats how you avoid power from the right hand because is you throw it you have your left side blocking it. Kovalev isn't doing anything like that and all of his movements are syncronized with Alvarez' movement.
