Calzaghe was fortunate to be around at a time when there was really only really him and Ricky Hatton as world level british fighters

We had guys like Junior Witter and Clinton Woods but they were guys who were fringe world level really

It wasn't a great time for British boxing and Hatton and Calzaghe benefited from being "all we had" at the time. I mean our best heavyweight was Danny Williams for god sakes

realistically his resume is similar to Kell Brook without the 2 losses

He was a good world level fighter but people need to stop pretending he was elite as he never proved that.

Its firm world class but not above. Froch has twice as man, and more recognised defences than joe, but his fans dont call him a living legend.

But I agree its out of line to call him a ducking fraud - someone with an unrecognised title like the WBO belt was in the 90s early 00s isnt ducking... they are just fighting a 2nd tier level of opposition that their belt demands, which is all correct and good. Once Joe won a legit title his defence quality (kessler and bika) went up.

noone calls a WBF or IBO title holder today a ducking fraud, they are merely fighting their own level, below world standard. Joe is an exception to them because he rose to world level for a few months.

Joe unified the Super Middleweight title, became the Lineal and Ring magazine champion, then move onto Light Heavy where he also won the Ring title. I don't really get why people complain that it took him a whole career to reach the absolute pinnacle. He proved without a doubt he was the best Super Middle of his era, then he moved up and beat a fellow ATG to become #1 at Light Heavy. You cannot turn your nose up at these achievements. Only a hater would not respect his achievements.

He moved slow earlier in his career, but so do many fighters. It is also little short of a miracle that he achieved what he did, taking into account his notoriously brittle hands. Probably would have been easy for Joe to walk away when he was fighting on smaller shows, with damaged hands, not getting the fights he wanted, etc. Fact he didn't should be commended, not a criticism. He came close to retirement several times, but he persevered, and he didn't do half bad. It's scary to think that the Calzaghe we witnessed was fighting with a handicap for over half of his career.
