You're 100% correct! I just think that you have be spectacular win on the defense! Sweet Pea, SRL, Camacho, Floyd, Lara, and Fury come to mind! Lara and Fury only got a draw! Harrison was not all that!I've had this discussion a few times with different people and there ain't really a way of settling it, but it's still fun to debate. My thinking is that it initially meant exactly what it said (ie the interpretation that the champ retains in a tie) but that over time as the saying was popularised folk began to give it the meaning your dad and uncles used - the meaning that is still used by a large number - possibly even the majority of fans to this day. My thinking is that it's a misunderstanding that may pretty much have become truth through popular belief.
Regardless, there is nothing in the rules of boxing that indicates that a championship bout should be scored any different to any other fight or that the Champ should be granted any advantage other than that of the ruling that of retaining in the event of a draw (which kinda implies that the challenger is required to do that bit more).
Hard to say, though. If enough judges believe that the adage means that the challenger needs to go over and above a normal victory then that is how they will score, so which is the real 'truth'?Comment

Ha, well 'spectacular' is kinda subjective ain't it? For me all you need to do is land more (and more telling) shots on your opponent than they land on you, and the style, the strategy and tactics employed to achieve that are largely irrelevant as long as that end is accomplished.
Individual cases I ain't gonna get into but let's just say I agree with some, but not all of your assessments!

Jeff beat Manny & Toney beat Jermell.I am surprised by Teddy's praise of the officials. I felt Charlo won, just like I felt Pacquiao beat Horn, and for the same reasons! Just because you fight better than expected (and I expected Harrison to fight well from the jump) it doesn't mean you deserve the title!Comment
