To be fair be fair there was never a time when it made any kind of financial sense for either Cotto or Maravilla to fight Golovkin... the WBC had been planning the Maravilla / Cotto / Canelo fights (with - given the respective ages of the three -the obvious long term goal of establishing Canelo as MW kingpin) as early as 2013, before Golovkin had really established himself as a major player.Originally posted by boliodogs View PostComment

... at that time guys like Murray, Macklin, Lee (though that fight fell through) etc were seen as solid and absolutely given a chance, but he blew them out of the water. Regardless of whether it was true or false, the perception was that he was a level above the rest of the division after it was seen that Maravilla was shot in 2014 or so and that seems to be when the narrative developed that he was somehow cherrypicking opponents, when in fact until then he just wasn't seen as good (or significant) enough by most for such allegations to even make sense.
Anyways. Regardless... I kinda got distracted from what I was trying to say with that ish though it is kinda relevant. The point is I don't need a fighter to be the best in the division (or hell the best in town if it's a local fighter) to follow them and enjoy watching them progress or fail and follow the ups and downs of their career. It's like there's a ego thing on NSB where somehow dudes believe that their own status is boosted or declines with the fortunes of their favourite fighter, which is amongst the weirdest things I ever saw. Weirder still they tend to assume that everyone else thinks the same way... puzzling.

GGG isn't finished, nowhere near. How can people on here write him off because he had 2 excellent fights with Canelo? I happen to think he won both fights, and but for some average judging these same people would be retiring Canelo. Fickle baśtards.Comment

Nah.. it was kinda the point I was making, I'm not trying to big Golovkin up with his fights merely point out the perception at the time he fought these guys was very different to the narrative that has grown up since. Sure Murray and Macklin will never go down as great fighters, but these are the kinda dudes (like Trout at 154 for instance) who were seen as solid barometers. It's kinda inevitable that these guys are regarded less highly in the US because the only times all except the hardcore fans that follow European boxing saw them is when they were losing... but back in 2012 / 13 when Macklin was seen as having beaten Sturm (the same Sturm that most saw beating DLH) and had given Sergio a tough night, or 2014 when many saw Murray beat Sergio, they weren't seen as easy touches at all. You can draw an interesting kinda parallel with Jermall's recent experience for instance - guys like even a older Korobov are seen as tests and provide the possibility of pitfalls and upsets, and that is the excitement - and that is also the kind of level GGG was seen at 4 or 5 years ago.Originally posted by DreamFighter View Post

Loadsa fighters of all levels in fact.
The only reason I talk about GGG more, really, is because other folk talk about him more (a lot more
) than other fighters -and that's mostly to do with the weird rivalries you get on NSB rather than anything the fighter himself has or hasn't done.

I'm a fan for sure and look forward to him fighting again. I don't think he's gone yet. There are other challenges out there for him. The Jacobs rematch would be interesting as well as a Charlo fight or Derevyachenko or Zurdo. I don't think his story is over yet.Comment
