This, right here, is it. Any judge will tell you that clean effective punching is the #1 scoring criteria. In many ways it's the ONLY scoring criteria because everything else is secondary and depends on this. That's how fights are scored.

Let's look at the other 3 criteria often mentioned in scoring - effective aggression, defense and command. You'll find they all depend on the punching aspect to have any real meaning.

It's called "effective aggression" because unless that aggression turns into punches it means nothing. You can't flail wildly around the ring and score points. It has to lead to an exchange of punches where you come out on top. Defense is another criteria that's used in scoring but only when it turns into offense. You cannot win a round without punching even if you dodge everything. The same goes for Ring Generalship. It means nothing unless you turn it into your advantage and win the exchanges with clean punches. You don't get points for making the other guy fight your fight if he is beating you at it. So in each case - aggression, defense and command - you get a bit of a bonus if you turn these aspects into exchanges where you win but by themselves they mean virtually nothing.

Too many people don't understand this and they think these secondary aspects must win rounds by themselves. That's not the case. Clean punching wins fights and there wasn't enough last night to create any kind of clear-cut winner.

A draw was just fine with me. It was a very close fight, hardly a robbery. It's not like Fury was dominating the early rounds. A lot of those rounds neither guy landed much of anything and could have gone either way. Boxing fans are way too emotional. If you look at it objectively, it's pretty hard for a challenger to go to the champ's home country, get dropped twice, not land many significant shots, and take the title away from the champ. Let's see the rematch! Solid HW scrap.

Live, i gave every round to Fury that he wasn't knocked down in... but i was obviously too excited to score. On replay I reckon R2 was definitely Wilders. R3 would be an easy give too depending on who you favoured going in. R1 could be shared.

Watch what I believe was round 7 again. I believe that's the round Wilder opened up with a huge body shot right at the beginning of the round. It drove Fury back for most of the round, and reduced his punch out put. Wilder also out landed and out punched/worked Fury in the round. Coincidentally I gave Wilder rounds 1-2-7-9-12, the two knock downs make it 113-113.

They need to ask all those people if they consider 30 seconds a normal 10 count. Fury was allowed to recover from the knockdown for half of the round. The is no denying that. It was a robbery. A fighter was knocked out and didn't make the 10 count, yet was allowed to continue anyway. First time ever that a fighter gets a draw and a ko for the same fight.

It was a legit count, watch the round timer on any clip and he is up at 9 and its all good. Also here is a video of the 10 count being looked into further

Wilder was the aggressor but it wasn't effective at all.

Fury was the ring general.

You score on ring generalship as much as you do with effective punching.

If only... The biggest problem with scoring in boxing is we have ZERO idea what judges actually use as criteria to judge. There is no guidelines. Completely subjective.

I would like to see two basic improvements to scoring:

1) A basic guideline established by the three judges themselves prior to any bout what they will be judging on. I am not asking for a hard and set rules, just a basic 3 or 4 point list agreed upon as the most important things in the ring that night. This should be kept between the judges and another party independent of them, say the ref, until after the fight. I want boxers being themselves, not playing to the judges.

2) All three judges have to set in front of the press before the boxers and trainers do and account for their cards.

I am tired of draws, controversial scoring, and wide random results. How many times have we seen scores so out of whack from the others we wonder if they were watching an UFC match instead of what was in the ring? Afterwards, we all wonder out loud why this wasn't scored for that fighter or if aggressiveness was over scored for the other fighter, or if activity was more important, or if solid punching, or if defensive effectiveness was scored at all, or if they gave extra points for hair or trunk fashion, or if the ring girls swayed a judge, or if they just rock papered scissors for it....

I have read his complaints a few times, and he is saying the ref gave Fury additional time after he was up to recover. Allowing him to move, answer questions, so on.

I have not seen the fight, so I am not backing him up or anything. But I have not seen him say the count was long. Just that he was given an extra long time to get his sea legs back.

If you thought it was a draw then fine. That doesn't make the outcome okay though.

One judge scored it for Fury. We can all understand that.
One scored a draw. I think a lot of us can understand that given some close/low output rounds.

But the result was determined by a guy who scored the first 4 rounds to Wilder. How on earth can you defend that?
