Comments Thread For: Hearn on HBO's End, U.S. Market, Overpaying Fightrers, More

Promoter Eddie Hearn has a busy end to 2018, with shows in America, the UK and Monte Carlo. But he said he won't be the one putting on Chris Eubank Jr-James DeGale [It's not our fight"] if it happens and added that Kell Brook might be prepared to wait to fight again in February, providing Amir Khan is in the opposite corner. Khan has already stated that he wants to fight early next year.

Promoter; "I'm overpaying fighters just to stop them going elsewhere".
Boxers; "Why ain't I getting paid as much as this other guy, who I'm much better than by the way".
Fans; "I can't afford to watch all of my favourite fighters as they're all on different networks, and almost everything is PPV these days.

This guy is funny lol Fighters aren't being overpaid. The purses have went up because the value of the TV deals has gone up (meaning the amount of money allocated per card). The promoters used to keep a lot of that value for themselves. Those days are limited now.

Once the PBC came and adopted the time buy model, it proved that boxing wasn't far off of UFC in terms of consistent viewership. That led to what we're seeing now with all these media companies trying to grab that combat sports content.

So fighters are getting more because of two things; 1. UFC proving that a combat sports property was valuable; and 2. Haymon having the guts to roll the dice on venturing outside of the premium cable networks.

Funny though, if you look at the purse budgets for the cards, things haven't changed too dramatically. The guys at the top are just making more, which they should. Eddie is just used to putting on Euro level fights and paying guys $200k with a packed venue lol

Spot on. Promoters want to take on the lion share of the money while the fighters do all the work.

Yeah it's a pretty dumb remark from Hearn and reeks of excuse-making because he has failed to lure away any of PBC's assets like he thought he could. The bottom line is that a fighter is worth whatever someone is willing to pay them. If PBC was operating at a loss for a while it was because they felt it would pay off in the future. Fighters can actually have value beyond the raw ticket sales they generate if they contribute prestige to your brand. Being the promotion known to have all the best fighters is a draw in itself, even if the fighters individually don't come with big fanbases

I honestly don't understand how British fans think this guy is bright. His public relations game is just plain awful. It's full of contradictions and illogical arguments. It's worse than Arum but not as detached as King.

The reality is that he's just a trust fund baby that is running his dad's company. He's basically an internet personality with his behavior lol

I actually like him on balance and consider him an improvement on what we had before here in Britain, but the Wilder negotiations and his DAZN venture have so far made him look a little out of his depth strategically compared to his more experienced American counterparts

Has he ever wondered if maybe promoters are over paid?

I think promoters are drastically overpaid.

At this point in time just being on the right broadcast network can be enough to build a star.

I'm surprised the networks haven't gotten smart and just cut out the middle man already.
