Why do people from the UK hate Mayweather?

Is it because he is constantly compared to Hatton? The reason I am sayin this is because everytime a pro Mayweather thread is started, the bashing starts with the UK members calling Mayweather a pu$$y and arguing about his p4p status. Why do you guys dislike him so much?

Speaking as an individual, but also someone who's from the UK, then what bugs me personally about the guy is that he hasn't - to my eyes - earned his stripes in the ring.

I don't care about Hatton, and I don't care about geography. But I do care when I read an interview with Mayweather saying that he might retire and be remembered as "the greatest fighter that ever lived"... after fighting Sharmba Mitchell. What he's saying is not only frustrating deluded, but also pisses in the face of real greats who had to dig deep in the ring.

I love American fighters and the American style of fighting... but you look back at the opposition of true greats like Robinson and Ali and it just doesn't compare. Floyd appears to have all the talent in the world, but is content to piss it up the wall against second-rate opposition... the guy hasn't had a competitive match-up in four years now, which is a disgusting waste of ability, much like what Roy did with his career.

I think the problem - for me personally, at any rate - is not the guy's talent, but the fact that he never tests that skill, and that too many people on here are content to drink from the HBO hype. Sure, he looks sensational against the likes of Gatti... but I look like Muhammad Ali when I'm shadow-boxing. He needs a test... and that doesn't necessarily mean Hatton.

Considering these guys should have fought for the last two years now, I doubt many consider him a threat. We'll all be lucky if the fight happens at all.

I think its that UK fans prefer humble champions for the most part. Look at Calz, Hatton and Lennox Lewis. They were all immensly popular in the UK and they are all very non-braggadocious. The hate was never there for Tzu who was fairly mild mannered as well.

PBF flamboyance and sometimes lack of respect for opponents i.e. Gatti is what I think leaves a bad taste in there mouths.

I'm not from the UK but have a few friends from there and a friend who boxes out of the UK and thats the general feeling I get from them.

That's a fair point... though of course it's easy to generalise, as I'm sure many UK members DO like Floyd.

But the loud-mouthed persona which isn't being backed up in the ring (in terms of competition) annoys.

Take a look at that Toney vs. Benn/Eubank video... the UK crowd laugh loudly at Toney's schtick, and Ali is still much-loved over here. But apart from the fact that they were FUNNY, they did do what they said they'd do.

What most pissed me off recently was Floyd saying he wouldn't fight Cotto as he'd only last four rounds... then signing up for an extraordinarily overrated ex-champion in Judah. If Cotto's so easy, why not SHOW us how easy it is?

What I dread the most is coming on this board and hearing the same bull**** about Floyd as you hear about China Chops (Roy Jones). "Oh, he never fought them, but he would have beat them anyway..."

For me having an imaginery boxing career is nowhere near as satisifying as actually SEEING it.

yeah but didnt cotto's promoter say they wanted none of PBF until 2007 i can find the link

also didnt hatton, mosley, margarito all turn him down in 2005 i can again find the link

also it was general consensus Judah just under-trained for Baldo much like Morales - Raheem but he still got his pacman fight so my point is sometime the big fights that dont come off arent his fault

I agree with you, but I've read Floyd interviews where he talks like the fights don't interest him anyway, which frustrates me.

That's another thing... multi-weight champs. Sure, technically, Mayweather was a champ at 140, but in this age of multiple belts you can "cheat" your way through the system. He should have fought Hatton to truly stake his ground in 140 before moving on. It's a boxrec confidence trick.

As for Judah, even though the Baldomir fight was a blip, I don't ever think he's been that good, seriously. He's a hard hitter, he's fast, and he's a lefty, but he gets gassed, unfocussed and cannot take a punch. I noticed that he mysteriously crept into the P4P top ten when he was due to fight Floyd (before Badly)... coincidence?
