Comments Thread For: Incessant Sanctioning Silliness Prompts Alternative Crusade

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Every couple of days, there's something else. Another of my colleagues in the boxing media business be they friend or foe in terms of affiliation comes out with an online or print opinion that laments the existence of sanctioning bodies and the often-dubious role they play in our sport. It's always easy copy. And it's generally pretty justified....

nope, you just added another turd to the pile

there is no reason why anyone should hold them in higher regard than the other turds

you cannot add to the pile, you must replace the pile.....

buy all of the titles, and retire them..... simultaneously contracting all of the top fighters

Haymon and Hoya could have done it..... Haymon with the money/brains..... Hoya with his name/structure

The last thing we need is to recognize a fifth world championship. What we should be doing is de-recognizing the WBA to get back to three. And since the WBO shouldn't have ever been recognized to begin with, that gets us down to two.

With the WBA having two world champions, this would get us down to two world titles per division instead of the current five, or even the six the author of the article is suggesting.

Adding another organization is absolutely silly and unacceptable. What journalist need to do is to not recognize WBA regular as a true title. Dont call Povetkin a former world champion because he never was one.

Eubank Jr tried to add legitimacy to the IBO title and he was mocked relentlessly on social media for winning a "mickey mouse" belt. A bit like the WBO In the 90s when Eubank Sr, Naseem Hamed and Benn were active, but they elevated the WBO belt by putting on great fights and defending it like it was as important as the WBC and WBA. By 1997 the WBO was a worthy belt, not as prestigious as the WBC or WBA, but recognised by most. The IBO needs time and great, EXCITING fighters to promote it. Never happening in this era - not as many fans to tune in and with the way things stand, the UFC is probably more easier to follow in todays busy world. Who has time to figure out who holds who when you have the top 10 contenders in UFC fighting over one belt on one channel.

Their ranking system isn't trash at all. You could argue the rankings are trash, but that's only because the stars don't want a fair system and the IBF ranking system is by far the fairest of the major organizations.

The problem in boxing is that the stars and the promoters want the rules bent for them and if you don't bend the rules for them, the fans will take their side.

The IBF won't bend the rules for anyone. Everyone is treated the same. Want a top ranking? Fight an eliminator. Otherwise, the top rankings remain vacant. The best available must fight the best available. Stars don't like this. They want the easiest route possible.

They also don't want mandatories that are strictly enforced.

The upside though is that fighters who are ducked know the IBF will get them a title shot. Nobody was in a rush to fight Errol Spence. He had to go the IBF route to get his title shot in a reasonable amount of time.

No, what journalists need to do is to not recognize the WBA period.

There's no such thing as the "WBA regular title." It's the WBA world title. Made meaningless by their decision to also have WBA super titles. The super title shouldn't be recognized and the world title shouldn't be recognized anymore after 17 years of being beneath the super title.

But to insist that Povetkin wasn't world champion is factually incorrect. He was world champion. Held the same title as Ali and Tyson. The WBA will never get rid of the super titles instead fans and media stop recognizing ALL of their titles.

                    Shame shame shame

WAS a good article until you typed those three letters in a row i, b and o. I stopped reading immediately as there is a clear conflict of inetrest.
WE KNOW IBO PAY LARGE SUMS OF MONEY IN ADVERTISING TO BOXING SCENE.

This tells us that this so called journo has no integrity. In fact, this site has no integrity if they did not disclose that they derive revenue from ibo - who is featured in this article.

I've NEVER read critical articles on this site, it's just gbp, top rank and now matchroom propaganda. If you are critical of them, the big boys won't feed you their scraps. Utterly pathetic.
