Thats crazy for a professional athlete to not to do any strength work. I know toney used to only spar but I guess some fighters can get away with it.
Mikey Garcia doesnt do any strength training just sparring & running

He should. Those things can improve your craft. Especially if you have dreams to go to higher divisions.Comment

No one did that back in the day and all fought 15 rounds today you have guys boxing with their tongue on the floor going to round 12Comment

So many conditioning 'experts' here lol...
Strength training can (and often does) benefit a fighter, no doubt.
But, some guys have the right balance of natural athleticism and muscular balance from birth.
I like Garcia's approach tbh, he is saying FU to all the crossfit, gym **** type and basically taking the line that his skills and roadwork will bring him the win.
All these boxers pushing weight sleds and flipping tractor tyres cough up a lung after 6 rounds lol...Comment

A few quick points.
Boxers today don’t have to condition themselves for 15 round fights. If 15 rd (Championship) fights still existed, they’d be ready for them.
Development of strength is simply a tool used to address the WHOLE athlete. In non-strength specific sports (powerlifting, Olympic lifting, strongman etc.) there is such a thing as too strong; Or better stated, strong enough.
Finally, the METHODS of strength training used and proper program management during training will be the determining factors behind whether strength will augment or hinder performance.
I’m looking forward for this one. Uhh, anyone have Showtime... and beer?
