It's possible I guess. It depends on whether or not he's been cycling on and off roids (I suspect he has) and how much effect they have had. Canelo might not even be a middleweight.
My thinking though is that he has no way of pulling out of the fight permanently and continuing with his career. He'd be better off coming in and taking an asskicking than to fake an injury or make some other excuse.

This is why the rematch negotiations were drawn out once again & weren't signed until January because both Lemieux & Cotto lost, even Jacobs didn't look good, it backed GBP into a corner with no other options.
Loeffler: "If it were up to us, that fight would have been signed a month ago and we would be promoting it - but I think we are still on time, if we manage to settle the terms in what remains of December, to carry out a good promotion if May 5 is confirmed as the date to carry out the fight. Gennady wants to fight before May but, if they commit to a rematch, we'll have to see if that makes sense. We can't put Gennady's career on hold but [a rematch] is the priority. If there's a rematch Dallas should be at the top of the list."
De La Hoya: "If Lemieux Wins - Canelo Fight Possible if No Golovkin."
Canelo: "Look, right now I wanna rest. Whatever the fans want, whatever the people want and ask for, we’ll do. You know that’s my style. But right now, who knows if it’s in May or September?"
as for the fight in december, big ppv generate more $ on sept and may if a big mexican star is involved...canelo ***ed up with the suspension, but after that he wanted ggg next more than anything...

Let's not dismiss the fact that if he had other options he'd be going through with it, he'd wait out Golovkin even longer. Hence the names brought up prior to both negotiations being finalized.
As far as GGG not caring so much about the rematch going through on the 3rd request? Come on man, once bitten, twice shy. His got nothing accomplished in the last year & would prefer to cement his accomplishments so he was ready to move on, not avoid or draw out the fight, he just has other priorities but the money is too good to pass up, so he plays the games that GBP asks of him in order to secure his family's future.

Look all I know is that Golovkin is gonna whoop that ass this time around. If Canelo pulls out he'll only make himself look worse while Golovkin's stock will rise. The money is obviously a major factor in this but bad comes to worse Golovkin should move on past Canelo if Canelo would ever to do something like that.
I still think Golovkin slaughters Canelo this September then he should look to unify the belts.

Canelo will fight safe (30 seconds of action per round) and cruise to a decision victory on the shoulders of GoldenBoy judges.
No reason for him to pull out.
