  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Responds To Errol Spence's Stance on Promoters

Oscar De La Hoya, the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, read with great interest as undefeated IBF welterweight champion, Errol Spence, stated that he really didn't need a traditional promoter handling his career. Spence has received several offers, but told BoxingScene.com that he's not interested in signing with Eddie Hearn, Top Rank or De La Hoya.

Weird, but not surprising that Steve Kim would contact Oscar to comment on that story. What was the point of getting Oscar's side unless you're trying to push a narrative?

Even though I am not a fan of ODLH, he does make a good point. If you are a fan friendly fighter or an entertainer it is important to have that vehicle to help you become exposed to different audiences. However, once you become a prizefighter, you don't necessarily need a promoter anymore but maybe an advisor. For example, once Mayweather left Arum, I think it was after the Judah or Baldomir fight, he had already built his image and could promote himself.

Nope. Spence was responding to a question he was asked about wanting a promoter. He named all the promoters that wanted him and he said he didn't need or want a promoter. That's the end of the story. What does Oscar add to the story we already don't know?

The stories that need balancing are these stories where they'll ask one side what's going on with another side but never contact the other side for a response. For example, Hearn says he sent a contract to Wilder. He says Wilder and his team are looking it over but he doubts they;ll sign it. That's when you contact the other side because they haven't told their side of the story (I just made up that example, Hearn didn't say that). Contacting Wilder for his side of the story would add something we don't already know and he gets to tell from his side what's going on.

And the original story was written by Idec, not Kim. This is how Kim operates though. He thinks fighters should have promoters so he goes out and calls De La Hoya to present the same point of view he has

Good points by Oscar. Spence should be a big star. So should Wilder. Al Haymon is holding these guys back.

I just don't see how Spence would be doing any better under GBP then he is by himself.

There's only on person in America putting on PPV cards and that's Canelo, who was built up by Schaefer and helped by being on Floyd's PPV cards.

There are 2 future PPV fights everyone want so see and they both involve Haymon fighters, Spence and Wilder.
