He was negotiating the renewal of his HBO contract, so basically a free agent... Could have done it easily but decided to hide under HBO skirt... Oh, and they later bailed out of a purse bid they knew they would lose... So yeah...

I agree. I just don't like how a fighter can be signed to a TV network. That stuff is crazy.

Yea, it sure is. Does this happen in any other sport? Maybe it does but I can't think of anything. Being owned by a tv network is ****ed up.

Public opinion (and most of NSB) favored Kovalev and framed Stevenson as the less-interested champion.

Then, the WBC actually made Kovalev its mandatory challenger and ordered a purse bid in April 2015 to get the fight made, but Kovalev’s promoter (Main Events) pulled out of the process because of a contract forbidding their man to appear on any network other than HBO.
