Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Lomachenko Can Make More Versus Linares on HBO
By Keith Idec - Oscar De La Hoya has drawn his promotional line in the sand. On the opposite side stands Bob Arum, his former promoter and current competitor. Who else would it be based on their longstanding love-hate relationship? Arum and De La Hoya seemingly agree on most things pertaining to putting together an intriguing Vasyl Lomachenko-Jorge Linares lightweight title fight...

Does Golden Boy not realize, Lomachenko is going to counterprogram them on May 12th with or without Linares? They really care that instead of Loma counterprogramming them with 1.5 or 2 million views on ESPN against say Beltran, that Loma would get slightly more counterprogramming them with Linares? I mean the difference is neglible, first of all, and secondly, shouldn't that concern be counterbalanced by the fact that in the first scenario, they would be counterprogrammed for millions of viewers who wont even see a GBP boxer or logo if Linares doesn't fight Loma, but if they let Loma-Linares happen, then it won't even matter whether fans watch ESPN or HBO, because either way they will see a GBP fighter and logo?
For example if I were Golden Boy, I would rather 1 million watch the Canelo-GGG replay, and 2 million watch Linares, for a total of 3 million viewers watching GBP boxers on May 12th, than have 1.1 million watch Canelo-GGG, 1.5 million watch Loma-Beltran, for a total of 1.1 million watching GBP fighters on May 12th.
Would they rather have 3 million fans watch GBP boxers on May 12th, or 1.1 million?
Or, even if Linares would fight on HBO instead, he would still only average like 750k viewers on that show on HBO, rather than 1.5 million or more on ESPN, so it's still a net loss of viewers seeing GBP boxers from Golden Boy's perspective. Plus, they would lose a fight slot on an HBO date to have to put Linares in a separate fight. This way they save that slot out of the limited slots they get from HBO each year, and get a free one on ESPN from Arum instead.
None of this makes any sense to me. If they can't work this out, it will be a black mark on all three of Eric Gomez, Peter Nelson, and Bob Arum's careers.

At this point I don't care who's at fault. The fans get screwed over as usual while multi millionaires argue to see who will become even more rich. F the Canelo vs ggg replay and whatever lame fight golden boy throws on hbo on the 12th and F Loma vs whatever stiff arum finds for him on ESPN.

Since when is Linares the draw and A side to Loma. Arum doesn't need to do GB and Linares any favors. Ironically GB didn't give a damn about Linares fighting in the UK while the fight wasn't promoted by them. The last 2 Linares fight promoted by GB at the Forum were duds and Linares was paid 250k. But somehow GB thinks Linares is on par with Loma and Mikey when it comes to drawing power and purses. Loma and Mikey are getting paid around 1 mil. While GB is paying Linares around 250k per fight. Looks like GB is screwing Linares out of good pay checks by thinking Oscar and HBO call the shots

But no one ever talks about that. Instead they question whether Arum will put Lomachenko in tough, when he's already done that, with all sorts of styles too, many times. This sounds like HBO and Golden Boy being ridiculous. They didn't cancel the March 3 card even though Showtime is counterprogramming them. And that's a live card. Canelo-GGG is just a replay. This is the age of DVR anyway, so who cares?
