  • Comments Thread For: Nelson: If Wilder KO's Ortiz - Joshua FIght Becomes Much Bigger

Former world champion and Sky Sports expert analyst Johnny Nelson is crossing his fingers that everything comes together for a fall unification between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs) and WBA, IBF, IBO champion Anthony Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs).

Nobody cares about watching Wilder or ortiz except hardcore fans. The casual fan won't really be tuning into that fight. The anticipation amongst boxing fans will be greater. Commercially, i don't think it will really make much difference at all.

Joshua is the one bringing in the money. He sells out stadiums fighting Takam...

Just letting you know, Wilder Stiverne II is the highest rated Showtime telecast for the last 12 months and the attendance for that fight was around 11k. Obviously not UK numbers, but for the US, those are pretty good numbers. And they are an increase on Wilder's past fights. So he's starting to build some momentum.

I expect the attendance for March 3rd to be high and the telecast might be the best number Showtime has had in years.

If he gets another savage KO, I think it might have a big ripple effect here. I had a lot of casuals ask me about that Stiverne KO. So Idk, we'll see.

I hope that's the case. I think it's criminal that Wilder hasn't reached a wider audience. Lets be fair, even if his opposition hasn't been great, the average armchair sports fan doesn't really care about that...

You have an American WBC champ heavyweight & olympic medalist who looks the part, knocks everybody out in brutal fashion usually. Imagine that in the past?? they would have been a huge name, great opposition or not. Most people who don't really follow boxing just want to see knockouts by a guy who looks the part.

His team and network he fights on really haven't done him justice thus far, so i hope things do start picking up.

He's flat out garbage except to boxing CASUALS. Guys like me who watched Foreman-Lyle, Holmes - Shavers, Norton, Frazier and a host of others think he is a B- HW CONTENDER. He shouldn't even be champ. PERIOD. His lack of competition is just plain indefensible.
