Comments Thread For: Spence: I Can't Force Thurman To Fight, He's No Mayweather!

IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) will not allow himself to get fixated on a unification with WBC, WBA champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs). Spence wants to unify the division, but finds it discouraging that Thurman is not really interested in fighting him sooner than later. In several interviews, Thurman made it known that a contest with Spence was not something that he envisions taking place in 2018.

True, totally agree... spence can carve his own path if Thurman isn’t there at 147. Before the goal was Mayweather not anymore. Spence can be the man at 147 if he takes/beats the better competition at 147, just like Kovalev (Adonis) did at 175 prior to Ward.

Thurman ran to grab a pen to sign for the Ghost, Porter and Garcia, but now he's hesitant. Thurman v. Spence RIGHT NOW is a bigger fight than all 3 of those fights combined.

Thurman knows that Spence is a big welterweight and will not make 147 forever. I think Thurman is actually comfortable making the weight and thinks he can wait for Spence to have trouble making weight.

I wonder how long Errol can stay at welterweight?

Spence can't make Welterweight for long, and I won't give him much of a chance at 154, since bigger guys there are not just big but huge.

Thurman took on two of the most dangerous WW in Porter and Garcia. Coming off an injury he'll likely face Vargas, and then I'm guessing a rematch is in order for either Porter or Garcia. I don't see the problem. It's not as though he's looking for a fight with Berto or Ortiz. Spence still has options with either Porter or Garcia, and Matthysse and Callazo can keep him busy for a few rounds. I don't have a problem with Thurman/Spence in early 2019.

Seems like ever since Mayweather retired fans are suddenly demanding fights take place right away. What happened to "marinating"...why is now ducking but with Floyd it was marinating?

I agree. Even though Thurman has two belts they’re pretty much on an even playing field. With a couple more big wins Spence can firmly establish himself as the man and force Thurman into fighting him

I agree with you. Spence is a big welterweight. He’s has to be less than 10% body fat too.
