Cotto was not worried about Paulie's power and that's why he was getting hit more as the fight went on. Think about it, if you know this kid can't hurt you then you are more apt to just come in clean rather than behind the jab. Cotto knew Paulie could not hurt him and that's why he was fighting the way he was after the 6th or 7th round.
BTW, that punch in the 9th was Cotto overswinging his left and missing Paulie that caused him to lose his balance and step back. Watch it again and you will see that Paulie hits Cotto with the jab and then Cotto tries to counter with a left hook but Paulie moved away and Cotto had overcommited himself to that punch.
