I doubt Spence would have turned down that Cotto fight anyways though. He would have added that scalp to the resume had it been offered. Jesse Vargas vs Omar Figueroa is more up Jesse's alley if he wants to build some momentum.
Actually Spence did turn down the Cotto fight for the same reason.
He didn't wanna sign a long term promotional deal with Golden Boy promotions.
I can understand why he wouldn't wanna commit long term to Golden Boy but I don't know why Jesse wouldn't.
He'll make money under Al Haymon but that's about it. I don't see him ever being anything special under Al Haymon.
The cotto fight is over rated. Ali will lose to Kell Brook next. So what exactly is this one fight with a old cotto really going to do for Spence, Garcia, Vargas etc....I think the purse was around 600k which Spence and Garcia both will probably make double in there next fight. Cotto is gone the only thing GBP has left is Canelo. It’ll be ****** to sign with gbp just to earn 600-700k for a Cotto fight that no one will care about a year from now.
I agree that Cotto doesn't do much for Spence and Garcia but that belt will net Ali a nice paycheck from Hearn. At this point of his career, Vargas could have used that paycheck also.

Oh ok well that makes sense. Those Haymon guys don't want to be locked down to a promoter. Jesse is a bit dillusional about how much of a star he is. Having Pacman on the resume doesn't help. Even though he got his ass kicked it somehow computed as he's on that level of a prime pacquiao in his mind.
As has been mentioned, without Cotto's injury, Ali doesn't likely finish let alone win (I thought it was a draw anyway but whatever). It was still a great effort and a good win and I hope Sadam enjoys his day in the sun.

Exactly! Jesse Vargas is over estimating his value. I like the guy but he's really not that good and he won't beat the top welterweights under Haymon. Thats why I feel he made a huge mistake turning down the Cotto fight. If he had taken the fight and beaten Cotto then he would have had more decent options come his way. Like decent paydays against Kell Brook and Liam Smith, both English Fighters who he would have had a better chance of beating than any of the welterweights under Haymon.
Like I said, Jesse isn't Errol Spence Jr or Mikey Garcia. I don't blame them for turning down the Cotto fight. They have skills, name recognition, and they are both undefeated. Jesse brings none of that.
But your right. He will get paid handsomely to get his ass kicked every time he fights.
I guess if he's cool with that then he made the right choice.
if anything I'd say jesse is more known than those two. Jesse has Pacquiao and Bradley on his resume, no one of that caliber is even on either of those other two that you've mentioned. I know he has 2 losses but 1 was to Pacquiao and the other was somewhat controversial with Tim
If jesse fought Cotto, who else is on Golden Boy to fight, whereas he actually has a chance to fight Thurman/Spence/Porter/Garcia, even if he will be used as guerrero type like u say
