Is the WBO a worthless belt? Kovalev vs Shabranskyy

So many no name champions and now you have Kovalev fighting for the WBO belt against Vyacheslav Shabranskyy, who probably isnt even a top 10 guy in the division

Its like Miguel Cotto winning the WBO belt, he beat Yoshihiro Kamegai whos terrible and lost to ***in Alfonso Gomez. Hell Cotto at this point isnt even a top 5 guy in the LMW divsion.

Another example is Liam Smith being WBO champion, he beat some guy called John Thompson to become champ. Like is John Thompson is a top 10 guy or even World level?

Seems like they just give title shots to any bum, and feed that bum to popular champions who draw crowds like Canelo, Cotto etc

All the belts are worthless, the champion defines the belt with whom he fights

All the belts are worthless or invauable in theory. Any belt is only as valuable as the guy wearing it or the guy you beat to wear it.

So in this case specifically the belt has more value if Kovalev wins then if this cat with too many letters in his name beats Kovalev.

The WBO was the least significant in the beginning. The first one to truly legitimize it was Prince Naseem Hamed. Hamed was the WBO Champion, then he beat all three holders of the IBF, WBC and WBA titles at 126. Hamed was the first fighter in history with a rightful claim to all 4 titles despite political issues. This, however, established the WBO as the dominant belt.

IBF strips true champions and feeds paper titles to highest bidders.

WBA has diluted their belt by having multiple "champions" in the same weight class.

WBC has made a mockery of their brand by making countless versions of their belt in order to obtain sanctioning fees from any significant earning fight.

The WBO remains the most legitimate title available today. Albeit a tenuous legitimacy.

To me it's definitely the 4th

It's just looks like such a sham it's either going to a Top Rank or HBo affiliated fighter or maybe Frank Warren

Their Champ is usually the weakest in their division

At this point the IBo might have better set of Champions in Joshua, Eubank,Gennady , Lara

Then the top 4-6 champs the WBO has

And the Kov / Sham for a belt is a f.ucking joke

Another one is Gilberto Ramirez, he beat a 100 year old Arthur Abraham to win the WBO title and thats the best name on his resume. Everyone else on his resume ive never even heard off. The fact that AA was even a WBO champion is a joke, he was barely a top 10 fighter at SMW when he won it.
Hell even Chris Eubanks IBO title carries more weight than Ramirezs WBO title.

The WBO champions usually suck or are unknown quan******, its probably the WBC who has the best guy.
