Last night he actually looked like he had improved since I last saw him at the Olympics. It could be that the tools were already there and I just hadn't seen them, or maybe Salas has had an effect already. I am a big believer in Salas so I feel optimistic

I dont remember Deontay getting headlines on NSB for winning his pro debut, I think his local paper in Alabama published something (tuscaloosa news ) and even after he won a Bronze for this country the headlines focused on his baby girl's disability namely how that inspired him during the Olympics

...yeah privileged you say...you dont know how hard its been for Deontay 'Bronze-Bomber' Wilder.

I think that was Salas effect no doubt, he did see the improvement last night, if you check my post on Joyce
last week you would think i hate him lol.

I just didn't rate him or like what i saw with him before
last night, dating back to watching him at the championship/commonwealth/lionhearts and olympics.

But maybe he would get better with age?

I don't think he'll ever be particularly eye-pleasing but he is simply very effective. He's not an AJ level talent but I expect him to surpass Chisora and Whyte

OK thanks, I'll hold off on firing any more shots -- for now...OH btw boxrec forums say it was a close fight, but I need to check it out myself...no vids online of this match, if you guys got one I appreciate it.

It was viewed as a dangerous fight on paper but Joyce handled it pretty comfortably, at least as comfortably as Dillian Whyte handled the same opponent. It seems that some people are disappointed that he didn't look more slick or destructive though. Also the opponent's shorts kept falling down

Cool I was going to search for last nights fight vs. Ian Lewison also, thanks. However I meant the Olympic final between him and Tony Yoka in the Rio Olympics ; all I could find on YT was Yoka beating Joseph Parker in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics...so a robbery in Rio for Joe vs. this caliber of opponent sounds off ; nevertheless as you noted he ( Joyce ) managed to go as far as the finals which tell me hes very skilled - I look forward to see how he progresses in the sport. Thanks again.

Oh, right. I just had a little look and couldn't find it either. Here's the NSB thread from the time, where you can see people's reactions immediately after the fight - https://www.boxingscene.com/forums/s...d.php?t=720573. Yoka is skilled but got a lot of generous scoring in the amateurs

I think Joyce demonstrated against Lewison that he has skills, but on the elite level of AIBA boxing he generally won fights by overwhelming and mauling his opponents. He's certainly not a pretty stylist like Tony Yoka

From what I saw, Joyce's career at the high level will last (and end) more or less like that of Audley Harrison. He's really poor, especially his guard. He'll be knocked out by the first average puncher he fights.

Joyce looked good in his debut against competent (albeit sluggish) opponent, footwork is great, jab is sharp, straight right has power, but the hook is a little slow, he fights pretty "straight up" and head movement needs work. I could see him going down hard if he gets caught while his stance is so upright.

Looked good though, I'm sure we'll see more of him on his way up the ladder.
