If he fought in the 80s, he never would have won a title. I like the guy, but I'm not forgetting that most of the titles he won were vacant....including the one he holds now. It was practically given to him. Well managed career.

Cotto(like Pacman) only lost with the best of the best and was at disadvantage in the Pacquiao fight with no trainer and drain as hell, Margarito cheat him, Canelo won barely the fight against smaller past prime Cotto,

Cotto has a great resume, the only wacky loss was with Trout.

Foh fanboy half of pacs loses were fluke decisions like horn, Bradley, and morales and he also beat Marquez a few times before the L he took to him.. cotto has lost to almost everyone he faced who's worth a damn other than the margarito rematch and a injured old Sergio.

Not buying it. Cotto is lucky he fought in an era where there were 4 titles per weight class. Pac didn't want any more of that? Make me laugh. He ran right over Cotto. There was never any need for a rematch. Nor did Cotto want it.

I firmly believe that had Margarito not chopped up his face with the plaster of Paris, things would have probably turned out a little differently. He is still a hall of famer but that loss took something out of him. All credit, he did rebound well.

The biggest factors in cotto not being as great as he could have been is the likelihood that he was beaten with plaster wraps and also his ego for not hiring a real trainer earlier in his career. He basically trained himself his entire pro career until he hired steward. He was good enough to get away with that vs most guys but he was over his head vs pac. In reality, I think at his best, if properly trained, he was capable of beating pac and doing so convincingly.

After the end of Arturo Gatti and Diego Corrales around 2005-2007, Cotto became one of my favourite fighters.

I lost interest after he was soundly beat by Austin Trout, but I will always consider Cotto a fighters fighter, a humble figure and a no-nonsense guy.

I know people associate the 80s welterweights with hearns, Leonard and Duran who were all greater than cotto. But if you look up the list of other fighters who held belts at welterweight in the 80s, there are plenty who were inferior to cotto.

Yeah, Cotto might have beaten Mark Breland, Colin Jones, and maybe Milton McCrory. With Cotto it's hard to say. He seemed to be guided towards vacant titles for his entire career. His claim to fame seems to be that he won multiple titles in multiple weight classes. He did beat Shane Mosely, though. His victory over Judah is a bit tainted with the groin shot. Good point about the 80s champs, tho
