Great move Mikey, Oscar is slick, Mikey has been there and done that with Bob Arum. He probably tried to do the same with Spence. Once Canelo stops getting gifts and loses, Oscar will be done soon. Bob Arum is already fading away, he has Crawford but he has no opponents for him. Crawford should try to get out ASAP. Kudos to you Mikey for taking a stand and not excepting a contract extension to fight a faded fighter who is on his way out

That sucks I would have liked to see that happen. I also read where Errol Spence Jr also turned down the fight. I wonder if it was under similar circumstances.

Mikey has to understand that if he's not gonna sign a contract with any promoter then he's not gonna get the fights he wants. He's stuck fighting PBC Fighters and I don't think Mikey will get another high profile fight anytime soon again..

Its Cotto's last fight. Would GBP make more money from a Cotto-Garcia fight or a Cotto-Ali fight? Hell, are they gonna make any money at all from Cotto-Ali? So you possibly lose money on a Cotto-Ali fight. Cotto retires, Ali has another loss on his record now you have to build him up again like they had to after his loss to Vargas.

Cotto-Garcia makes money. Cotto retires. Mikey fights your other fighter Linares and you make more money. Or maybe it's such a good fight and does so well Cotto comes back for the rematch

I get it, Garcia wants money --- but thats all him and his camp talk about...money money money.

You need blue chip promoters to broker big fight deals. Ward never could have gotten Kovaquit w/o it. Super dumb.

Garcia was able to sit out for 3 years without financial problems. I'd say he's pretty smart with his money. You also don't know what type of deal GBP offered him so you aren't in position to say if it was better or not

I don't understand why these fighters would assume that a company would offer up a blue chip fighter without options? Why would GBP spend all this money on Garcia without no hopes of future returns?

Garcia could have turned this Cotto fight into a a nice 2-3 fight contact with real big money. Win or lose against Cotto he could have gotten real nice coin. If he win, perhaps a rematch and either a win or loss match up against Linares.

The free agent gig is an exercise in futility.

And if Ali pulls off the upset they have the winner under contract while if Garcia wins then all Golden Boy got was the event and Garcia walks away.

Plus Ali is local Olympian with a nice fan base.

We don't know what the terms of the contract was but he could have given GBP 2 options on him, one of which would be for Linares afterwards. If it was a short term deal like that it wouldn't be too bad.

Besides that, what does Garcia expect? He isn't a huge draw and isn't doing GBP any favors and they take all the monetary risk in the fight and future. He should have give them 1 or 2 fight options. That may have sealed the deal
Mikey Garcia owed Top Rank one fight, and that ended up costing him two years; no sense in falling into the same trap again.

Mikey's not Saul Alvarez or anything, but he's known throughout the boxing world has shown that he can sell tickets on the East Coast, and will sell a lot of tickets when he finally headlines his return to SoCal. You add that Showtime is clearly interested in airing his fights and it's not like Mikey is scraping for opportunity.

Linares is basically in a position where he's either fighting Mikey Garcia on US TV, or fighting someone else off of US TV.

Maybe they parlay Ali into something.

The biggest question is what are his options at PBC camp where it's infested with part-time boxers?
He's looking at to at least 5 years to get the kind of money the Cotto fight offers.
The options are not any better.

This is pretty standard in boxing. It's why you'll see x fighter in top rank events even if he isn't a top rank fighter. It's leverage on the part of the main promoter saying "I like this kid and would use him on more cards if I can find the right opponent for him. So i'm going to give him one of my main guys, if he performs well I have the option to match him up again."
