It's not a terrible idea. This type of weight class jumping (up then down) from a fighter of Mikey's caliber isn't unheard of. Duran and De La Hoya come to mind immediately. RJJ did it too but that was a different situation than the other two imo.
Based on the above comments, seems like it could pull a solid viewing too. I could see Haymon getting this done for Mikey.
Any talk of Crawford is silly as we all know. Arum's not interested, and Mikey won't be fighting on ESPN anytime soon.Comment

I'm a huge Mikey Garcia fan but I think he'd be biting off more than he could chew with a Cotto fight. Cotto at his age is still an experienced veteran with solid punching power. We don't really know if Mikey carried his power into 140 because Broner's always been known to have a good chin. But imagine the fight taking place at 154, Cotto would dismantle him in my opinion. The most equal playing field would be 147. Mikey would be going up and Cotto would be coming down to a weigh he really doesn't feel comfortable in anymore.Comment

I don't see how Al Haymon would be involved in this fight at all. It's not a terrible idea. This type of weight class jumping (up then down) from a fighter of Mikey's caliber isn't unheard of. Mikey isn't signed to Al Haymon.
Mikey is a free agent. It'll just involve Mikey, Miguel Cotto, and Golden Boy promotions. I can see Mikey getting the Cotto fight and then the Linares fight right after. Makes senseComment

If it happens it must happen at 147.... Garcia's frame and structure are to small for anything above that weight class right now... 130-135-140-147 tops.... if it happens, I can see Garcia boxing his way to a Victory!!!! The young, talented, disciplined, hungry lion will come out victorious on this one and will announce there's a new king!!!Comment

True, but you have to think about Cotto's power and experience too. Mikey only has one fight above 135 and that was just recently against Broner. Cotto is the more experienced fighter at 147 and 154. If he can make 147 and not drain himself he can be very dangerous for Mikey. Either way seems like a solid fight if both men come into it in the best shape possible. If it happens it must happen at 147.... That's the key here... I think cotto has not fought at welterweight since the Pacquiao beating in 2009... you're talking about 8 years ago... and his body is older and his walk around weight might be at 160 or 170.... to make 147 will be a definite drain... you have to remember cotto was naturally obese and that is the reason why he got into boxing... he has not won anything significant in the last 10 years....in my eyes he got a gift against mosley and clottey... sergio martinez was a cripple with gloves... and his other major opponents beat him, Pacquiao, Trout, Mayweather, Canelo, ... Now Garcia said lets do it... will Cotto say let's go and if yes, will he agree to 147?... I seriously doubt it... he sees himself as the "A" side fighter (learned from floyd and Manny).... therefore he will fight under his terms which means he will decline the fight!!!True, but you have to think about Cotto's power and experience too.
