Comments Thread For: Canelo-Golovkin Winner Unrealistic; Maybe Cotto Should Retire

By Keith Idec - Knowing he can always count on Freddie Roach to say something provocative, Miguel Cotto turned to his famous trainer Saturday night. Cotto had just completely out-classed Yoshihiro Kamegai to win the vacant WBO super welterweight title at StubHub Center in Carson, California. The Puerto Rican icon’s unanimous-decision victory over the game Japanese contender marked Cotto’s first fight since his decisive loss to Canelo Alvarez in November 2015...

He only wants one more fight. Retiring instead is sort of an asshole thing to say.

Cotto vs Spence or Thurman would be kind of nice, and it would be a great opportunity for Spence or Thurman.

      Cotto Brook is nice.

Cotto Lemieux would be awesome unless Lemieux truly is on the same level as Canelo or better, in which case it would be a mismatch.

Mikey Garcia is too small. Cotto Danny Garcia isn't bad. Cotto Khan would be entertaining but I feel like Khan could still actually be a relevant and exciting world class fighter if he just sticks in his weight class, 147. He could beat anyone on the night at that weight class besides maybe Spence, who is just too big and would walk through Khan's punches. But put him in there with Cotto to take a sustained beating, and now you've basically ruined Khan's career. The KO vs Canelo was brutal but it was just one punch. Cotto is a good puncher but not as big as Canelo, so he might actually beat down Khan in a sustained way which would really end his career at the top level.

Cotto vs Crawford between 150 and 152 pounds would be pretty nice.

      What about Cotto Lara?
Canelo and Angulo got to him to some degree, maybe Cotto could too, and if so, great fight. Lara has shown vulnerability to the left hook specifically and that's Cotto's money punch. And if Cotto could win that would be a real meaningful, legacy-enhancing fight to go out on. And Lara is not a huge puncher so Cotto wouldn't be taking a gigantic health risk, as opposed to fighting GGG or Lemieux, so Lara would actually be a real nice option for Cotto.

Billy Joe Saunders to win that last 160 title would be good too, except then he really should stick around for one more against the GGG-Canelo winner just to try to be undisputed (but more likely, do the sporting thing and give the GGG-Canelo winner their chance to win the final belt like they deserve).

Shawn Porter would be a fun fight. So would Marcos Maidana if he came back.

Lucas Matthysse would not be bad at all although Matthysse is probably too small, but you never know, he does have a nice punch.

That's all I got for now. I aint getting paid for this **** (but really, I should be).

Fair call. Apart from that big error of judgement, which was in the headline, it was a good article.

Lol, all points I've been making in regards to scheduling, availability of fighters, etc...

            Also Marquez and Bradley retired.

For me Cotto's best options at this point are:

Lucas Matthysse at a catch weight, Khan at a catchweight.

Kell Brook at 154 or Margacheato 3 fight at 154.

Jeff Horn is no longer fighting Pacquiao. That would be a good fight if Cotto was able to steal Pacquiao's thunder and fight Jeff Horn at a negotiated weight. I don't think Horn's people will allow that though.

Cotto likely will not get a huge payday fight against Canelo or GGG.

Cotto can still make good money in his last fight, just not huge money.

I can see a Cotto-Matthysse fight December 2nd at 150 for the WBO Jr. Middleweight Title at Madison Square Garden, stacked undercard if Golden Boy works with other promoters to feature fighters for a PPV that can do about 350,000 or so PPV buys.

Something like this is the best Cotto can do if he sticks to December being the last time he will fight.

            But we'll see what happens.

Cotto v Brook would do incredible numbers in U.K and fill a stadium. Would be a good send off for Cotto, similar to Klitschko, and would be a good opportunity for Brook to grab a belt @ 154. If Brook wins, his next fight would be a mandatory against the Smith/Williams winner - a good domestic fight which would also sell well and fill a big arena. If Eddie Hearn has as much respect for Brook as he says he will try and make this all happen for the sake of Brook's career. If he cant deliver this for Brook, i'm afraid Brook will get bashed up by one of the other belt holders @ 154 and retire

I don't fancy Cotto against either Canelo or Golovkin either, but there are other good fights available, he definitely doesn't need to retire. I think suggesting that he should after his performance against Kamegai is pretty ignorant honestly. What about Demetrius Andrade?
