I've always found that laughable and I doubt "tune up" fights really help anyone. It's mostly just a way to take easy opponents and make easy money. Any ring rust that exists should technically be shaved off by the time you leave training camp. Many athletes don't even believe in ring rust. Its simple, you need to be active to sharpen up after a bout of long inactivity, this is why andre ward came back to fight 2 nobodies, that's two camps spent on sharpening up. Thinking about it more, you do forget or neglect some things after an absence, which you should eventually be reminded of after some time drilling/practicing/sharpening.
Fighters are rusty after time off, this has been seen numerous times despite a training camp, but it does depend on the fighter the degree.Comment

Then they wouldnt show up looking like sht. I can understand not believing in it if you never really left it, but a year or two will leave rust.I've always found that laughable and I doubt "tune up" fights really help anyone. So you think Floyd is still prime, and layoffs and being 40 has no bearing on his fighting ability?People need to stop harping on the 2 year layoff like it means anything. Someone with 20 years of boxing knowledge and experience doesn't just forget how to do something just because they haven't fought in two years. It's not even the first long layoff Floyd has come back from before.
Even the 40 year-old thing is way over exaggerated.Comment
