    whys rigondeaux rated so highly?

Whats he actually done? People talk about him like hes the most talented guy in the sport. Seems to be very high on many peoples pound for pound lists.

The guys beaten donaire and lived off of that win for 4 years since. He also got put on his arse in that fight and it was a very close fight on the scorecards (116-111, 115-112, 114-113). ESPN had it 114-113 rigo. For some reason there seems to be some narrative on this forum that it was a schooling.

Theres been plenty of good fighters around his weight class, after all hes had 4 years since the donaire fight to fight someone that would have an ecg trace. Dont give me the bull**** about him being ducked cause lomachenkos managed to get better names in the ring already and he also had the feared amateur reputation. If you want big fights you can generally get them.

The guys 36 and hes wasted his career, as far as im concerned what ever bone lomas promoter decides to throw him, he should go and fetch it.

Maybe it might be down to his amateur pedigree, thats why hes rated so highly, but then i get told by many people that amateurs dont matter.

Im not an avid follower of the lower weight classes but from where im looking it looks like his resume is full of a bunch of stiffs? James ****ens, really?

Not even heard of most of them, i know of 'king kong' agbeko but he was so far past his sell by date im surprised he wasnt covered in mould.

Ive never known someone be so highly rated for such a thin CV...

You have to look at how highly Donaire was rated at the time, and realize that he was rightfully rated incredibly high and that Agebko was an excellent world class boxer as well and Agbeko was reduced to a plodding, hapless nothing and Donaire was practically ruined as a star. Rigondeaux isn't a professional ATG based on his career and he may not be because of his age, but he's one of the most talented boxers alive. It's why they started him off the way they did and why he got Donaire as early as he did in his career.

What's happened since then is a combination of out-of-the-ring choices, managerial incompetence, diplomatic disaster among the boxing elitists and bad timing. But there's a definite reason why he is rated so highly and you can make anyone sound unimpressive if you want to. It's pretty easy. Teddy Atlas, who is a notorious hardass who isn't even vaguely interested in helping hype jobs get hyped, even for ESPN, when they were bringing Rigo in, Atlas said when he watched him fight as an amateur he thought he might be the greatest amateur in history. Things like that come out of Atlas' mouth, you should pay attention, even if he might be wrong. If you're in the know, you know Rigo's a huge talent, at least.

You don't need to fight against elite opponents for the people who know what they're watching to spot an elite fighter.

Elite fighters do not fight each other in this day and age and we're trying to change that.

Rigo could have fought 20 cab drivers in his pro career and anyone who knows what they're watching will know and be able to point out that he's an elite fighter.

how do we even know hes that good if hes not fought anyone in 4 years? The guys 36 fighting in a style that very much relies on reflexes. Is bizzarre how long someone can dine out on one decent win that could have gone either way.

The Donaire win was good, although some people felt Donaire was already slipping a bit at that point. I still rate it as a very good win anyway.

Aside from that, he's fought a bunch of nobodies for the most part, hardly anybody in the top 20 or 30. You could say some of the bigger name fighters around those weights avoided him, but i'm sure he could have landed fights with at least some top 10-15 guys who don't make big money or have much to protect.

Also, for a supposed defensive wizard, he's been put on his back by some guys that aren't that good. I still think he's potentially a knockout waiting to happen.

The thing is, if he does lose soon, people will just say he was too inactive and already approaching late 30's, which might be true, but it could also be that he was never all he was cracked up to be in the first place as a pro. I guess we might never know until he gets some more decent fights.

You only seem to care about resume and what a fighter has 'done' on paper, when it suits your agenda.

Weren't you on Beterbiev's pipe a few months back and when I asked you what he's done in terms of resume, you told me he was a great amateur. Stop being a donkey
