I can only speak from my own experience so the one thing I would say is if you're new to training and you're interested in developing your punching power you need to build your punching technique on a foundation of power generation.

That means throwing fast, hard punches on the heavybag with everything you've got, every time - once you've gotten down the proper mechanics and punching technique.

You'll gas out quickly but as the weeks and months go by your stamina and endurance will increase..

You will train and condition the muscles to explode off your shoulder like a fighter jet launching off an aircraft carrier.

This must be thought of as foundation building. Eventually you can move over to shoe shining fast combos the way most coaches prefer - but build the foundation of generating power under your technique first.. This does not work well in the reverse.

Now, in terms of technique; staying with the aircraft analogy, you want to shoot from your shoulder and right before you hit the target tighten up that fist and push through it like Bruce Lee using that that hip thrust for his one inch punch.. With your entire body.

A powerful punch in my view has multiple stages like a rocket. The thrusters in your back and arms give you speed but you must use your fist as a detonating warhead.. So your arm becomes a chain as opposed to a club or a stick.

Now obviously most boxing trainers will never let you get away with this. They'll want you to train in more balanced way and more than likely they'll want you to emphasize speed and combination throwing over anything. They won't want you to load up on your punches..

As much as you are able to try and find your own path and way of doing things. People may laugh at you or discourage you in the beginning for not doing things in a classical way but eventually over time you will see the results..

I think you just have power, its something you have or you dont. Putting on muscle mass wont change it, proper technique can of course imrove it but power is just god given.

This is also the reason why power is the last to go (or never leaves).
              Exactly this

Well there is that whole debate how "punching power is born not made"...
Yeah some people just can't break an egg with a running start haha

Weight only matters if you know how to use it
Or the person you are fighting knows how to you your weight to his advantage

I think we're all guessing. I'll venture to theorize, however, because I was never exceptionally strong as an athlete using any other mechanic or playing any other sport. I was probably better than average but as a puncher I'm in a much smaller group of people out there.

And again, I couldn't hit a baseball 450 feet or throw a football 85 yards but I can damn near rip a heavybag out of the ceiling with either hand and it's all because of how I developed my arms and my back for the first three or four years I was training - because of how I trained.
