Explain the Usyk backlash

There's a couple of posters who reckon he ain't **** but they're mainly the dudes who refuse to give any credit to anyone who ain't from the US (or possibly just African American)... Kigali's one I think but there's a coupla others... but it ain't like Usyk has been singled out.
TBH though there's very few posters who don't recognise Usyk as a quality fighter, and those that do appear to dislike him as a matter of principle which in my world means that those opinions can be pretty much ignored as meaningless.Comment

Lebedev was still able to outbox Gassiev for long stretches though, he was simply not able to compete physically. And I don't get why you seem to think the talent level is low at Cruiser - sure they ain't got the moves that the 140Lbers have man, but that's just physics. It's kind of difficult (and pointless) to compare the divisions anyway, but just how would you go about showing objectively that Cruiser ain't very good relative to other divisions? Besides, even if it wasn't what's actually important is whether a division is competitve and has good fights to be made, and Cruiser does - in spades - and that was even before the WBSS was announced.Comment

I really do disagree. I'm quite shocked you think this tbh lol.
Cruiserweight is loaded and really deep. REALLY deep I don't see any other division that has fighters to the quality of say a Kalenga probably outside the top 20-30.
You've got guys like Huck going upto Heavyweight and arguably beating Povetkin - a top 3 HW at the time.
An old Cunningham who could no longer hang at CW going up and dropping Fury and giving all these HWs real issues years later in fact
Breidis knocking Charrs head off. What does that say about the HWs?
The CW division is brimming with talented fighters and all those top guys pack real dynamite. There are a lot of quality prospects coming through as well Ryad Merhy is very fun too watch, Fayfer - A very unorthodox switch-hitter quite reminiscent of Pirog.
Golovashchenko he is a cross between Golovkin and Lomachenko just messing with that one
That fight with Mchunu was on short notice and he's a real awkward, slippery little bugger and really hard to look against.
He's probably ranked top 15-20 - a guy of that quality is probably going to be a world champion in most other divisions IMO in fact he's better than most current world champions
I will agree I don't feel Usyk is as slick as many elude to. In fact I think guys that throw straight shots can hardly miss him at times but he's still a very impressive specimen who impresses me greatly with his footwork and working off angles.
Hopefully this tournament will change your opinion and bring the best out of them and you'll see its actually full of talent.
A tourney won't change my opinion, like I said, the only good one's there that I see from a technical standpoint is Gassiev. I like Bellew too. That's about it.Comment

Backlash is too strong a word for some people's critique about his technique in the ring. This forum has become so much about defending fighters you like that no one is even allowed to discuss boxing anymore.
Anyway I'd still say he's the best at CW. Would love to see him vs Gassiev.Last edited by BrometheusBob.; 07-19-2017, 05:34 AM.Comment

Until Kev showed up to the thread, I pretty much agree with what everyone was saying. Kev's the first guy I've seen bother to critique him so harshly. I've only seen lukewarm criticism of the guy. I think he's excellent and enjoy watching his fights.Comment
