I wandered down to the Legendary Kronk gym in hopes of interviewing Jermaine Taylor, the reigning Middleweight champion. Wacthing Jermaine work I was impressed. But there was another who caught my eye amongst the many talented fighters working in the sweltering heat, that being Sechew Powelll. As I watched him move around the ring while shadow boxing I could not help but notice the highly techincal work that he was exhuming. His punches flowed freely and sharply, his head moving and bobbing underneath of the imaginary punches coming for him.
Sechew made his way to Kronk from Brooklyn, Newyork where he had begun his boxing career as a highly decorated amatuer. Winning 152 of 159 amatuer contests it was obvious in watching his work ethic that the man had been brought up and trained well in the fight game. Sechew has won every national tournament offered in the United State and has had numerous appearances on the international stage while representing the United States of America. This has prepared this young man extremely well for his venture into the professional ranks where he is now enjoying great exposure as well as a 19-0(11) record.
I sat to talk with Sechew after his workout and found him to be a very likeable and kind person. His smile belied the intensity that was shown inside of the squared circle only minutes earlier yet when looking him into his eyes while he speaks of his career the desire and intensity was easily seen. He wants to be the best and has taken every step that he could to get to that point.
Powell is handled by Lou Dibella, a big time promoter with the right connections to move such a talent. Dibella had set it up for Sechew to display his talents on the world scale as he arranged for Sechew to fight on Showtimes ShoBox- The Next Generation.
Powells first assignment from Sho-Box was to fight one Grady Brewer 17-8 (11). This was considered an oppertunity to showcase his skills against what seemed to be an average fighter. Sechew found difficulty in the pug and also found himself sitting on the canvas in the 5th round. Powell would rise from the canvas to win himself a split decision victory but the trouble that he had with the opponent seemed to leave doubt in some peoples mind.
In his next bout he would derail one George Armenta by Unanimuous decision before stepping again into the Sho-Box arena. There he faced Patrick Thompson and easily won an 8 round decision. Then Powell stepped up to face his most formidable oppponent to that date. He squared off in a much anticipated bought with the K-9, Cornelious Bundrage, fighting out of the Kronk Gym. An early barrage of punishing blows left the K-9 incapacitated as Powell stopped him in the 1st round. But the questions still lingered about his chin from the knock down in the Brewer fight and Sechew wanted so badly to erase any doubts that the public may have of him.
He would next face a tough assignment against a former Jr. Middleweight champion named Santiago Samaniego, a tough fighting and hard hitting man who, while growing in age, still possesed the skills and power to be dangerous. Again Powell shined as he stopped him in the early part of the 3rd round. But questions still remained.
Yet aother tough bout would folow pitting him against a strong and durable young fighter named Archak TerMeliksetian again on the Sho-Box series. "I saw this as the perfect oppertunity to erase any doubts that the public may have had from that earlier knockdown against Brewer. I wanted to quite the critics and show everybody how talented I really am." Powell made the best of the night, fighting hard to bring home another one sided decison in a strong and hard fought bout.
It was time to step it up again as Powell faced Robert Fraizer, a tough fighter from Rochester, Newyork. "I knew that this could be a tough fight for me. I mean look at the guys that he had faced before me. Winky Wright, Charles Murray, Felix Sturm....." Sechew reclines in his chair abit as a large smile graces his face. "I handled that with ease." The scorecards of the fight agreed as Sechew posted a lopsided 10 round victory.
Right now Powell stands as the number 5 contender in the IBF but has yet to crack the top 10 in the other organizations. He is among the top 15 in the world ratings but he sees this changing very soon. "Im going to keep fighting strong and show these people exactly what I am made of." Sechew has visions of fighting for the title early next year. He has the right people behind him and the love of a wonderfull girl who stands behind his tough travels through the game.
"It takes a woman who has respect for the occupation to make it all work. I could be away in camp for up to 6 weeks and she is calling me and sending me things that I might need. She is my partner, my friend and my companion." A single woman has brought many a fighter to their knees but Sechew is confident that he has found a good one. "If I call and say that I have broken my headgear or something, shell take care of it and I will have a new one the next day."
Powell is the self proclaimed king of the Sho-Box The next Generation Series and he has right to say that he is. "I have been on there more then anybody, 5 times I fought on the show." Powell loves the exposure as well as how well the network has treated him, "They have been really great to me...."
Sechew Powell is a man on the rise. He is a hungry fighter who is never exactly satisfied until he has reached the peek of his profession. He not only wants to win the belt but more so I believe that he is looking for the fight fans respect everywhere around the world. "I want to be the peoples champion."
Sechew is one the right track and will do everything that is neccesary to reach his goals. With his charisma and personality to go along with his exquisite boxing skills I believe that he will win that belt one day. And if you ever have the chance to sit and talk with him, you would realize that he is a champion of a person aswell. The perfect man to represent the people as champion.
