Comments Thread For: Barrera: Ward Hits Low On Purpose; Kovalev Didn't React Right

Sullivan Barrera battled Andre Ward for 12 rounds last year. Barrera believes Ward, who had a point deducted for hitting him low in the eighth round, throws low blows "on purpose" to take his opponents' focus off of fighting him. That said, the light heavyweight contender thinks Sergey Kovalev responded poorly during the eighth and final round of their rematch June 17 in Las Vegas.

I agree that Kovalev should have returned an all out power shot right back at Ward's sensitive area, and that back in the 7th round, when Ward was already low blowing him several times.

Ward's defense was superior this bout. He figured out Kovalev. How many times did Kovalev miss? Kovalev attempted the exact same combinations and offensive aggression but Ward fought back more angrily than the first bout. If you are Kovalev you freeze, his whole career froze because he took his only style for granted.

Kova would have gotten disqualified, had he gone eye for an eye...

Kovalev and Lomachenko didn't know how to respond to bullying tactics from Ward and Salido! They better learn quick because this isn't the World Games or the Olympics!

That might have been on his mind and is a strong possibility. He definitely might not get away with the same **** that Ward does.

I agree with that too but guys like Kov and Pac, for whatever reason, do not like to drop low blows or return that sort of behaviour.

If I was in his situation, I would have thrown several low blows back.

I'll never understand how some of these fighters don't get it. You're in there with a guy who fights dirty? Don't get mad, get even! WTF

Sully is correct on both counts.

Earlier in the fight, Weeks gave Ward a warning for hitting Kovalev on the waistband of his trunks. When Ward did the same thing again, I'm pretty sure Kovalev reacted the way he did because he was hoping Weeks would deduct a point.

So I guess you can say Kovalev was looking for an advantage himself. The mistake he made was in not realising that, when you're fighting Andre Ward in the US, the advantages only go one way.
