What has that got to do with anything? You need to read this article.

All those fighters I mentioned have gone up into multiple weight classes. Lil G needs to move up and beat bigger men like Ward, Kovalev etc to be an ATG.Comment

He needs the names. A solid victory over Canelo would cement him as an ATG. Should he manage another elite victory or two then he could enter into the discussion of greatest fighters to ever fight at 160.
We just have to wait and see how it plays out though. Who does he beat and how?Comment

It means that Middleweights don't move up in weight like fighters in the lower weight classes do. Hopkins, and Jones did it recently but that's unusual. So you don't consider Hagler Carlos Monzon and SRR all time greats because they either didn't move up or failed trying. Is that what your getting at.Comment

My first thought was...if mcgregor beats mayweather....then ggg beats mcgregor....then ggg is shoe in for GOAT....with mcgregor a close second and may/pac tied for third. He's very, very good, no doubt, as his amateur record and knockout percentages attest, but his professional competition has been relatively weak (although I think Danny Jacobs was a tremendous challenge on that night for anyone). I think he needs to beat Canelo and Jermall Charlo (both tough tasks IMHO) to be considered unquestionably great. If he could consolidate all belts and equal or beat Hopkins' defense record on top of that, he'd have to be seriously considered for #1 middleweight of all time. Not sure he can do any of these, as I think his peak may be at or nearing its end. Thoughts?Comment

For GGG to be considered great, he has to beat at least three high quality opponents in their prime. Roberto Duran only beat one high quality opponent in his career -- Sugar Ray Leonard. That is why I don't considered him an ATG or even a great boxer. Larry Holmes was a great boxer. However, he never had the chance to fight three high quality opponent because the heavyweight division was very weak at the time that he fought. Therefore, I don't consider him an ATG, even thought I was a huge fan. He's very, very good, no doubt, as his amateur record and knockout percentages attest, but his professional competition has been relatively weak (although I think Danny Jacobs was a tremendous challenge on that night for anyone). If Golovkin beats Alvarez, that will be quality opponent. He will have to beat at least two others to reach great status. I doubt if Golovkin will even fight two other great opponents in his career, let alone beat them.Last edited by big_james10; 07-08-2017, 10:33 PM.Comment

So you think hagler beats jones...or you use emojis cuz you got nothing to say? I don't quite understand what you don't get...we were talking in context of greatest mw lists which have guys on them who would get their ass kicked by better, but less accomplished fighters. The general criteria for those types of lists is a mixture of legacy, longevity, titles won, defining fights etc.Comment
