I wouldn't be that hard on Weeks about it.

But I definitely agree with the article in that a more definitive ending should have happened. Absolutely.

I just rewatched the fight and Ward rabbit punched Kovalev, not the other way around. What Ward is referring to is the nice inside shots Kovalev landed to his cheeks and ears all fight while he was grabbing Kovalev. Ward did the better body work inside, of course, but Kovalev with his longer arms, needing more space, landed the better head shots inside because it suited his arm angle better.

Ward would turn his head to the side sometimes when Kovalev threw them, making them land on the ear, but they weren't rabbit punches. Rabbit punches are behind the head. Kovalev did not hit Ward behind the head more than a couple times all fight. In fact I saw repeatedly where Kovalev would hit Ward with a beautiful shot to the cheek inside, then Ward would get angry and hit Kovalev as hard as he could behind the head, then complain to the ref, who reprimanded both fighters as if both had committed a foul, when in reality only Ward had. He answered legal shots to the side of the head with illegal shots to the back of Kovalev's head.

But because Ward is skilled in the Art of War, and came up with something he could accuse Kovalev of as a strategy to distract from his own fouls, you had to repeat it like a sheep, as if you accept it must be true simply because Ward said so.

Please rewatch the fight carefully and count how many times Kovalev actually hit Ward behind the head, compared to how many times Ward rabbit punched him. In fact, why not just count total fouls by each fighter? I would be very interested to see which fighter actually fought dirty.
Your creativity is magnificent. Your use of words is uncanny. "Hit Ward behind the head" vs "rabbit punched". This is Pulitzer worth for fictional NSB posts.

I'm not sure Kovalev gets up if the ref starts counting. After the first two...he was done. What fighter bends over like that?

And you may be right. At least it would have been more definitive though. A fight shouldn't be stopped on a low blow. The last punch was a low blow.

Point is, this has been ongoing and ongoing on how the fight ended. Where if the fight went on, Ward would have likely had an emphatic win and we wouldn't still be talking about this and dealing with this today on Thursday.

Weeks does owe an apology to both fighters! He should've, at a minimum, given Kovalev a standing 8 when he was sitting on the ropes. Ward would've finished him within the next 2 rounds anyway, because Kov was finished! What doesn't get much mention is why Kovalev didn't retaliate! I don't want to hear about his morality or some other BS! This is prize fighting, and all of the greats would tell you, if the ref isn't helping you, you help yourself! Kovalev just sucks at fighting on the inside, and that's why Kovalev just lost!

oh boy, smh... wasn't the best stoppage but there was no standing 8 count in that fight, kov gave up, there was not 3 straight low blows... the last one was semi low but not on the balls its just a built in excuse the tasteless fan base will use to make themselves feel better. all these articles n threads about these last blows but what about the ones Kov faked? what about kov turning away from ward, what about him mentally giving up and illegally bending over to get help, what was weeks to do without a standing 8 count. same ol song u guys are sore losers and HURT! We all saw the fight n saw that kov was looking for a way out.

i forgive tony weeks and appreciate him being contrite. he's a very good ref and he had a bad night.

reffing a boxing match is really, really hard. i'm in awe of what they do, frankly. to maintain that level of focus and apply a level of skill to it is not easy, and it's a critical part of our sport.

the decision isn't likely to be overturned. the right guy won the fight, he just won it in the wrong way. there should be a hearing and facts should come out, such as weeks saying after the fact that the blows were low.

moving forward ward needs to be more clolsely officiated. he's never even had a point deducted, and he's one of the dirtiest fighters in boxing.
