promotional contracts 99% of the time have provisions in them that change the guarantees if a fighter loses a bout during the term of the agreement. They also usually have provisions that allow the promoter to release the fighter if the fighter suffers a loss. But those "release" provisions usually have a time limit like within 90 days of the loss, so thats why Roc had to pay Cotto at least something. They likely could have dumped him for free right after the loss to Canelo (and probably should have).
Unless of course with roc being novices maybe they did not have those provisions in their promotional contracts. I find that doubtful, but if they didnt then thats on them.....
