Let's get something straight about a fighter's physical prime

I keep seeing people saying that calling ggg past his prime, or slipping are just "excuses". Fact is, when you're 35 years old, you're no longer in your physical prime...end of story. Most azzholes who are 35+ and just go to the gym a couple times a week or play a sport on the weekend probably don't feel like they once did. Now imagine competing at the absolute highest level in a professional sport. Fighters may peak at all different times in their career due to experience and adjusting to a more comfortable weight etc, but there is no 35+ fighter that wouldn't be a better version of themselves if they turned back the clock 5 years. If you're over 35 and aren't on some type of peds...you ain't in your prime.

I think you are making a fair point. To say a 35 year old fighter might be slowing down should not be controversial given his age. It should not be an excuse, give all the other variables though.

We have seen a lot of fighters perform at a really high level even into their 40's. Typically power sticks around, intelligence, ring generalship/craftiness and skill stick around. Reflexes and legs typically are the first to go.

I think it would be disingenuous to say GGG is past his career prime before he fought any real challenges. It is a fact of life though that 35 year old boxers do not perform at the same physical level as 28 year old boxers.

Man, GG fans are freaking the fk out. Everyone was saying that GG would crush Nelo. Then Golovkin fights Jacobs and suddenly, "Remember, he's OLD!"
Show some support for your guy. This is really a 50/50 fight. No need for excuses from either side. One is 35, the other is fighting a bigger guy for only the 2nd time.

I remember posts saying how gg may be able to fight til he's 50 like Bernard since he's so fresh. Jacobs did a lot mental damage to these guys

Thank you. I wanted to bring that up but thought no one would believe me. I wish I could remember the user names of the guys that said that^ **** because these fkers were insistent that, because GG had taken so little damage, that there was no reason why he wouldn't have longevity like hopkins.

One time, I decided to start bookmarking the really ****** threads on here for occasions like this. But, I had to quit that shyt because after a couple weeks I must have had 30 bookmarks.

I think GGG is better than he was on the way up and I pick him to beat Canelo. I also think he could be effective as a top fighter into his 40's.

It doesn't change the fact pointed out in the thread. Take the feelings out of the equation, on both sides.

It doesn't need to be called an excuse...it just simply is what it is. I've always viewed the fight as being competitive, and still think ggg beats him. I take issue with people dismissing it as an "excuse" when his age is factored into the discussion about the fight.

Seriously all this back and forth, feelings based rhetoric is annoying.

Like you said. It is part of the story of the fight.

I don't disagree...but anyone who knows the sport can't say that ggg looks as sharp as he did 4-5 years ago. There's been a noticeable decline, particularly in his last 3 fights imo. That's not to say he can't still be a good fighter, but unfortunately his best days may be behind him...and it's a shame his peak was wasted on lackluster opposition.

I haven't seen age become an issue for him yet. Yes, every fighter ages but there are ways for them to adapt and their experience and advancement in technique makes up for it.

But, I'll respect that you feel he's aged. Fair enough. The thing is that people are using that to discredit Canelo. They both have disadvantages. GG is getting on in age, Canelo is fighting a guy who is a weight class above anyone he's fought before (save for Chavez). So, we can come up with reasons why either might be disadvantaged but I think it's still good timing for this fight and I see it as 50/50.
