Nacho had a dumb ass game plan period. He wanted Jr. To box something he is trash at. He trained to box and once he saw that didn't work he folded like a lawn chair. Blame goes on the hall of fame trainer as well.

Garcia fighters come in overweight constantly. If Garcia was in Chavez's corner, Chavez would have lost half his paycheck to the scales.

Might have been worth it for a better performance. He was getting countered, jabbed, and was a moving target for Canelo all night.

The pairing was a horrible idea from the beginning.

Chavez Jr. doesn't have a high boxing IQ or defensive skills that Nacho looks for in his fighters.

Chavez Jr. is a brawler by nature and that was his best chance at victory.

If he would have had Robert Garcia or Freddie Roach in his corner he would have had a better chance.

the problem is not the game plan, its jr himself. garcia or roach wouldnt be able to help him. the guy just wouldnt throw in fear of getting counter. you cant fix that.

Finally got a chance to watch the fight, and though Chavez Jr did basically lose every round (think I had two rounds that I thought could be given to Chavez Jr if you were desperate), he needs to stick it out with Nacho Beristan/Angel Heredia, imo.

Shot confidence is something really tough to get over, but Chavez Jr's fitness was there late, he seemed to be attentive in the corner, and the tactics (in the few moments that he got over the fear of the counter) seemed to fit well into the style of an actual 6'1 middleweight from Mexico.

Gilberto Ramirez is the WBO 168lb champion; fight Rocky Fielding (solid fighter, likely not world level, and the chance of Sky Sports/Showtime/Televisa), fight Matvey Korobov (solid fighter, world level, great check as to how Chavez Jr is fully coming along), and then the stage is set for another massive event.

Can't sit around for too long, though; his fitness is good now, but everyone knows that Chavez Jr's battle with food, so better to get him into camp without too much delay.

Chavez Jr doesn't respect Robert Garcia, and even his respect for Freddie Roach was waning.

Nacho isn't Julio Cesar Chavez, but he's earned himself a deep respect in the Mexican boxing scene, and he seems to also have Chavez Jr's respect (committed to the long camp, listened to what was being taught to him, didn't fold up and leave when things didn't go his way, etc).

Chavez Jr showed up, weighed in below the contract weight, showed up on fight night, fought a fair fight, and left.

"In the business world" Chavez Jr performed just fine and did what he agreed to do.

Now, "in the business world", he wouldn't have earned any performance bonuses, but that's another conversation

Chavez wasn't going to win no matter who the trainer was Canelo is just so much better a fighter. yeah he could of gotten dropped/taken more punishment if he was more aggressive and threw his hands WHICH CANELO WANTED HIM TO BY THE WAY. But at least fans would of gotten their money's worth and the fight would of had fireworks before that occurred. Instead this strategy resulted in death by a million cuts and Chavez lost his confidence and quit. Quitting was always a possibility but fans thought if he quit it would be on his stool late in the fight after trying to make it war. He skipped all that and quit after just a round or 2 and didn't try. Blame lies mostly on Chavez but some of it was because of a bad pairing with Nacho who confused Chavez more then helped him. Previous trainers he's had success with simply tried to enhance what Chavez does well and not make him into something he's not.

Guess this is what happens when one of Memo's pupils is subjected to VADA testing. Can't gain that power edge and build confidence. Chavez mailed it in, fought scared and was feeling the effects of coming down in weight to fight a stronger man.

Moving on to GGG/Canelo, it's anyone's fight. I don't see where either of them has a clear or distinct advantage. This is why the fight is compelling. No one demands a one-sided fight. The fans want this, so be happy it being made.

You are right, but chavez is also weak minded and it was too much for him to overcome with this much stacked against him. What he needed was to start quick with pressure to gain momentum and confidence but instead let canelo beat him up early while "boxing" and lost all that.
